With but little outside assistance, the success he has achieved is due largely to his own efforts. Strong determination, persistence in the pursuit of an honorable purpose, unﬂagging energy and keen discrimination—these are the salient features in his career and his life stands in unmistakable evidence that success is not a matter of genius, as held by some, but is the outcome of earnest and well directed effort. Dr. Pence was born in Mason City, Iowa, August 22, 1874, and he is the son of John and Louisiana (Lock) Pence, the father a native of Indiana and the mother of Illinois. The paternal grandfather settled at Pence Grove, near Mason City, Iowa, when there was but one house there, thus this family has been well known in the northern part of the state since pioneer times. The only man living in that vicinity when the elder Pence came was a fur trader. Grandfather Pence settled on government land there which he operated until his death. The‘maternal grandparents settled in Jackson county, Iowa, in an early day. Doctor Pence's father also took up government land and farmed near Mason City for many years; he is now living at Fertile, Iowa. He has been very successful in his life work and is highly respected wherever he is known. His family consisted of ten children. In his religious relations he is a member of the United Brethren church. Doctor Pence grew up on the home farm and was educated in the country schools and the Clear Lake high school, also spent a year at the normal school at Valparaiso, Indiana. Turning his attention to the medical profession, he entered the medical department of the University of Iowa in 1898, having taken two years of his under-graduate work in the College of Physicians and Surgeons, in Chicago. He made an excellent record in these institutions, and thus well equipped for his life work he went to Cherryvale, Kansas, where he opened an office for the practice of his profession, but remained there only a short time, coming to Laurel, Marshall county, Iowa, in September of that year. Here he engaged in practice until the fall of 1907, when he entered the University Hospital at Iowa City, taking post-graduate work for a year on the eye, ear, nose and throat. He returned to Laurel in the spring of 1908 and since then has been successfully engaged in the general practice. Having always been a student. he has thus kept well abreast of the times, his success being second to none, and his services are in great demand for a radius of many miles of Laurel. Two years ago he opened a drug store here which he has since operated with gratifying success. The Doctor's domestic life began in 1902 when he was united in marriage with Josephine Pierce, a representative of a highly respected Marshall county family, she having been born and reared here. This union resulted in the birth of one child, Lawrence Waldo. The wife and mother passed away in 1905, and in 1906 the Doctor married Hattie Peirce, a lady of pleasing personality. This union has been blessed by the birth of one child. Holly E. Fraternally, Doctor Pence is a member of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, the Ancient Arabic Order of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, the Knights of Pythias, and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks..
