According to both his marriage record and his death record, Joshua was the son of Caleb & Elizabeth (Carnes) Erwin. It appears that Joshua was married to a Sarah Nafus before he married Susan. Sarah (Nafus) Erwin married Daniel Cook on January 21, 1886, in Stillwater, Nebraska. (Sarah's maiden name has been incorrectly transcribed as Nabers in ancestry.com. By clicking on the actual record and looking at the document, it may be seen that her maiden name was Nafus.) Sarah Cook, age 49, is shown in the 1900 Census for Stillwater, Nebraska, with sons Cornelius Erwin, David J. Erwin, and Daniel Erwin, along with several Cook children. Sarah Cook is also seen in the 1910 Census, still living in Stillwater, Nebraska. I believe this Sarah Cook was Joseph's first wife, but I have not linked them, as I am not sure. If anyone has further information on this, please let me know. Joshua's last name was spelled Irwin in his death record found in ancestry.com and in his obituary, which I have transcribed below. In all of the other records, his last name was spelled Erwin. ----------------------------------------- Obituary From "Ottumwa Courier," Tuesday, June 10, 1924: BURNS FATAL TO J.C. IRWIN RESIDENT OF ROUTE 6 SUCCUMBS TO INJURIES RECEIVED WEEK AGO J.C. Irwin, 76-years old, who was severely burned about a week ago at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W.W. Rankin, route 6, when the clothing of the bed in which is was sleeping caught fire, died last night at 11 o'clock at St. Joseph's hospital, where he has been since the accident. The cause of the fire has not been determined, although it is thought it may have been caused by sparks from his pipe. Funeral services will be held at the home of his daughter, route 6, tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock, and interment will be in Pleasant Ridge cemetery.
