Moore of Berea, Nebraska ~ brother of deceased ~ Joshua Hamilton Moore The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa (Lucas County, Iowa) Thursday, April 23, 1908 Newbern, April 18. -- JOSHUA HAMILTON, son of JOHN J. and LUCY J. MOORE, was born in Putnam County, Indiana, Dec. 19, 1847, and died in Newbern, Iowa, April 13, 1908, aged 60 years, 3 months and 24 days. In 1850 MR. MOORE's parents came to Iowa, settling first in Monroe County. Five years later they came to Marion County, where the deceased spent the remainder of his life. In early life MR. MOORE gave his heart to God, being converted in a series of revival meetings held in the spring of 1869 under the ministry of Rev. D O. Stuart, who is now a super-annuated minister of the Des Moines conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. MR. MOORE united with the Methodist church, and in all his relations as a member, whether as trustee, steward or Sunday school superintendent, he labored to promote the interests of the Kingdom of God. The circumstances of his death deserve mention. On Sunday evening, April 12 he attended a young people's meeting at the U.B. Church in Newbern. He had risen and spoken at some length on a topic; a few moments after resuming his seat he was taken violently ill. Friends removed him to a near-by dwelling and summoned medical aid. After passing a night of intense suffering due to an intestinal trouble his spirit winged its flight Heavenly at seven o'clock Monday morning. Death had found him at his post of duty. Brief services were conducted at the residence of the deceased, one and one-half miles east of Newbern, April 15, by Rev. M. Hulbert, of the U.B. Church. The remains were then taken to the Union Chapel Church where the deceased had formerly held his membership for many years. The pulpit was tastefully decorated with flowers provided by many thoughtful, sympathetic friends. Rev. C.W. Smith, of Columbia, preached the sermon, bringing a helpful message of consolation from the text, "But we would not have you ignorant, brethren, concerning them that fall asleep; that ye sorrow not, even as the rest, who have no hope." The interment was in the Gosport Cemetery. MR. MOORE was never married, and leaves seven brothers and four sisters to mourn his loss. Those present outside the county were H.M. Moore and wife, of Des Moines; H.C. Moore, of Elliot, Iowa; W.G. Moore, Berea, Neb.; and A.R Moore, Rockville, Mo. In recognition of MR. MOORE's last act in public worship, the pastor of the U.B. Church in Newbern will hold memorial services next Sunday evening, April 19. ∼60y 3m 24d
