Revolutionary War Soldier Joshua J Harriman enlisted at Hampstead New Hampshire July 4, 1780 in Captain Gilman's Company, Colonel Scammell's Third New Hampshire Regiment, a mere three weeks after he turned eighteen. Revolutionary War Soldier Joshua J Harriman enlisted at Hampstead New Hampshire July 4, 1780 in Captain Gilman's Company, Colonel Scammell's Third New Hampshire Regiment, a mere three weeks after he turned eighteen. Joshua's enlistment came eleven months after fleeing his home in Bucksport Maine due to the retaliation from the British for the attack against them in the Penobscot Expedition. After five months and twenty one days Joshua was mustered out of service on December 21, 1780. It is most likely that he returned to Hampstead collecting his stepmother and siblings and returned home to his father in Maine. His father had taken up a new settlers lot in nearby Orland after the British burned down their home in Bucksport. Joshua married Elizabeth "Betsy" Hunt Keyes of Orland Maine in 1786, the daughter of Samuel and Thankful (Hunt) Keyes. Her father commanded the first continental army raised on the east Penobscot in 1776. In 1795 the couple, along with brother Asa Jr. and his wife Tyrphena (Betsey's sister), settled across the river in Prospect where they bought one hundred acres together. On the shared property Asa started the first ferry from Prospect to Bucksport. Joshua built a house overlooking the Penobscot, since known as the James Pierce House, the first framed house in Prospect Maine. He was a Master Mariner who devoted some of his time to bay fishing. He was also active in plantation and Town affairs and represented the district in the legislature at Boston.
