In 1866, Joshua and his family moved, along with his father and his family, to Cherokee County, Kansas (near present day Hallowell). He was in time to get land by homesteading. His homestead of eighty acres he bought, and his other eighty acres he acquired under contract, which the total made him an extra good farm for which he immediately began to improve. In 1866, Joshua and his family moved, along with his father and his family, to Cherokee County, Kansas (near present day Hallowell). He was in time to get land by homesteading. His homestead of eighty acres he bought, and his other eighty acres he acquired under contract, which the total made him an extra good farm for which he immediately began to improve. He built a log house and broke up land that was very fertile being new and yielded good returns. He set out quite a large orchard of trees that grew and very soon yielded them fruit for their family use. And for many years it was one of the outstanding orchards of the county. Joshua donated and dedicated the McKee Cemetery in Cherokee county, Kansas. A marker at the Cemetery reads: "McKee Cemetery, Donated and Dedicated by Joshua MKee, 1876". The cemetery is located northwest of Hallowell.
