Read More	BUCKEYE STATE NEWSPAPER LISBON, OHIO THURSDAY, OCTOBER 8, 1908 PATTERSON OBITUARY Joshua Patterson, a Civil War veteran and life-long resident of Columbiana County, died at his home on East Pine Street at ten o'clock Friday forenoon, after an illness of nearly a year with liver trouble, which caused a general breakdown incident to old age. Mr. Patterson was born near Bethel Church in Wayne township August 7, 1837, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Joshua Patterson Sr. who were among the early settlers in that part of the country. Most of his life was spent on the farm. About forty-three years, he was united fin marriage with Miss Rachel Rice, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Rice of this vicinity. She died four years ago last February. On account of ill health, Mr. Patterson was compelled to give up farming eighteen years ago, since which time he had lived in this city. During the Civil War, he served in Company F, 104th O. V. I., and was a member of Starr Post No. 138, G. A. R. of this city. The following children survive, Isaac O., Robert, and Thomas Patterson and Mr. Harvey Green, all of this city; Lewis V. Patterson of Alliance; Mrs. Mary Johnson of Canton, and David Patterson of Chester, West Virginia. He is also survived by a brother, William of this city. Funeral services were held at the house last Sunday afternoon at two o'clock, Rev. R. E. Pugh of the Presbyterian church officiating. Members of Starr Post attended in a body and observed the Grand Army burial service at the grave in the city cemetery. Civil War Veteran Co. F 104th Regiment The Sultana was a paddle wheel steamboat commissioned in 1863 on the Mississippi River during the Civil War, according to historians. It had a maximum capacity of 376 passengers. It was constructed of wood in 1863 by the John Litherbury Boatyard in Cincinnati, she was intended for the lower Mississippi cotton trade. No real media coverage of the Sultana Disaster - why, as it occurred the day after the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln and during the closing weeks of the Civil War. He was one of the few survivors of the ill fated steamer, Sultana, which burned to the water's edge when returning with prisoners of war. SULTANA was a Mississippi River 260 foot side-wheel steamboat, which exploded on April 27, 1865, in the worst maritime disaster in United States history. Constructed of wood in 1863 by the John Litherbury Boatyard [1] in Cincinnati; she was intended for the lower Mississippi cotton trade. The steamer registered 1,719 tons [2] and normally carried a crew of 85. For two years, she ran a regular route between St. Louis and New Orleans, and was frequently commissioned to carry troops. The Sultana was on its way from Vicksburg, Mississippi to St. Louis, Missouri when the explosion occurred. Although designed with a capacity of only 376 passengers, she was carrying 2,137 when three of the boat's four boilers exploded about 2 a.m. and she burned to the waterline and sank near Memphis, Tennessee.[3] The disaster was overshadowed in the press by events surrounding the end of the American Civil War, including the killing of President Lincoln's assassin John Wilkes Booth just the day before, and no one was ever held accountable for the tragedy. * Article found by Arlene Rice-Obertance Great Niece of Joshua Smith & Rachel Rice Patterson Jr.
