Description	:	Adams County Free Press March 2, 1899 Squire Devore of south Cass County four miles north of here died Monday after a lingering illness of six months. Uncle Joe, as he was commonly known has been justice of the peace for 18 years without intermission. He was highly respected by all who knew him. The funeral was held on Friday at the German church conducted by Rev. Cupp. The attendance was the best ever known in that vicinity. Adams County Free Press March 9, 1899 Joshua Devore departed this life near Massena, Cass County, Iowa, February 28, 1899, aged seventy-four years, two months and twenty-seven days. The funeral services were conducted from the M. E. church in Victoria township, by Rev. A. Y. Cupp of Carbon, and were largely attended, which attested to the high esteem in which he was held by his friends and neighbors. Mr. Devore held the office of justice of the peace in his township for eighteen consecutive years. He was a devoted member of the Baptist church. Ew was born in Carl County, Ohio, December 1, 1824, and was married to Miss Caroline Leasy July 2, 1846, in Columbiana County, Ohio. He removed to Adams County, Iowa, in 1870 and to Cass County in 1872, were he lived to the time of his death. His sons are among the most influential men of Victoria Township. His oldest son, Andrew, is a brick mason and lives in Corning, Adams County, Iowa. To Mr. and Mrs. Devore were born six sons and two daughters; the two daughters preceded the father in death.
