His grandparents were John and Anna Maria Schrupp Freese. On March 1, 1847, in Coshocton County, he married Mary Jane Pettit, a native of Pennsylvania. They were the parents of 7 children: Sophia Elizabeth, Benjamin Franklin, Mary Ellen, Melvina, Walter D., George Emery and Anne Mabel Iowa Arthur.
