Description	:	Josiah moved with his father from Butler County, Ohio to Wayne County, Indiana about 1826, when about 11 years of age. By about 1835, he had moved to Marion County and lived in Indianapolis. The 1884 History of Indianapolis, by Sulgrove, cites an example of early racial prejudice in the city. "Not long after the completion of the first Episcopalian church in 1838, a young lady was brought to Indianapolis from the East to play the organ. Read More	Josiah moved with his father from Butler County, Ohio to Wayne County, Indiana about 1826, when about 11 years of age. By about 1835, he had moved to Marion County and lived in Indianapolis. The 1884 History of Indianapolis, by Sulgrove, cites an example of early racial prejudice in the city. The affair took wind and a mob of unruly men and half-grown boys, led by Josiah Simcox, surrounded the house containing the bridal party and captured the groom. He was ridden on a rail and warned to leave, which he and his wife did at once." By 1843, Josiah had moved to Owen County, Indiana where he appears in the tax list of Jefferson Township, taxed on 80 acres. He also married Chloe Gravet in 1843 in Owen County. A Sarah Gravit, age 13, born in Indiana was living with James and Chloe in the 1850 census of Owen County. This may indicate that Chloe was a Mrs. Gravet at the time of the marriage and that Sarah was a child by a prior marriage. It is also possible that Sarah could have been an out-of-wedlock child, a younger sister, niece or some other relative. About 1855, the family moved to Marshall County, Iowa and settled near Marietta. A few years later, they moved to a farm one mile west of the area later occupied by the town of Ferguson.
