Description	:	Josiah Edward Wilhide was born March 14, 1844 in Thurmont, Frederick County, Maryland, the son of Henry and Catharine Delphey Wilhide. On April 1, 1869, in Thurmont, he was married to Julia Susan Freeze, daughter of Michael and Susanna Wetzel Freeze. They had 10 children: James Franklin, Harry Wilson, Susan Kate, George Washington, Harvey F., Michael Freeze, Linnie May, Nora Mamie, Allen Walter and Grayson Evers Wilhide. Read More	Josiah Edward Wilhide was born March 14, 1844 in Thurmont, Frederick County, Maryland, the son of Henry and Catharine Delphey Wilhide. On April 1, 1869, in Thurmont, he was married to Julia Susan Freeze, daughter of Michael and Susanna Wetzel Freeze. Josiah enlisted at Thurmont, Frederick County, Maryland, in Company D., 6th Maryland Inf. Reg't, with his brother Edward O. Wilhide. Pvt. Josiah E. Willhide, cited conspicuous for bravery in the charge on 2d instant, and in the battle of the 6th instant at Sailor's Creek, Virginia, Brig. General J. Warren Keifer, commanding Second Brigade. Josiah passed away July 17, 1915, in Thurmont, and was buried on the 19th in Weller's Church Cemetery there. From James McGuigan's ledger: "April 1, 1869. Josiah Willhide (of Henry Willhide) married to Julia Freeze, daughter of Michael Freeze." From the Marriage Records of Frederick County, Maryland: "Josiah E. Wilhide, 23, of Frederick County, bachelor, farmer, to Julia Freeze, 21, of Frederick County, maid. Married April 1, 1869, in Frederick County, by J. Duey Moore." Obituary for Josiah Edward Wilhide from the Catoctin Clarion of Thursday, July 22, 1915: "Mr. Josiah E. Wilhide, a native of this vicinity, died at his home near Deerfield, this county, Saturday afternoon, July 17, 1915, aged 71 years, 4 months and 4 days. Mr. Wilhide has been in bad health for several years, but being accustomed to an active life he fought off disease as long as possible and since early spring has been unable to be about. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was one of the 62 young men of this vicinity who enlisted in the cause of the Union, he being a Private in Co. D., 6th Maryland Infantry, serving from August 26, 1862, until June 20, 1865. Although his surviving comrades were members of Jason Damuth Post No. 80, G. A. R., of Thurmont, Mr. Wilhide never became a member of the Post. Funeral services were held Monday morning in the Methodist Church, at Thurmont, his pastor, Rev. Paul Holdcraft of the United Brethren Church and of which church Mr. Wilhide was a member for nearly 40 years, officiating; Revs. Martin and Flohr assisting in the service. The deceased is survived by his wife, four sons, viz: Frank, Harry, George and Michael Wilhide, and three daughters, Mrs. Susie Harbaugh, of Sabillasville; Mrs. Linnie Brown, of Cascade, and Miss Nora Wilhide, at home. Thirteen grandchildren, one adopted grandchild, and one great-grandchild also survive. The pallbearers were his four sons and two sons-in-law, Messrs. Robert Harbaugh and Joseph Brown. Interment was made in the United Brethren Cemetery. Wilhide & Creeger funeral directors." Funeral notice for Josiah Edward Wilhide from the Frederick News-Post of Wednesday, July 21, 1915: "Josiah E. Wilhide. The funeral of Josiah E. Wilhide who died at his home near Deerfield Saturday, took place Monday morning with services at ...., conducted by Rev. Paul Holdcraft, assisted by Rev. W. L. Martin and Rev. I. J. Flohr. Besides ...., he leaves the following children...., near Thurmont; Harry.....near Deerfield; Michael.... Mrs. Susie Harbaugh, Sabillasville, Mrs. Linnie Brown, Cascade, and Miss Nora Wilhide, at home. Also thirteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild survive." From the estate administration of Josiah Edward Wilhide, March 28, 1916: First account of Harry W. and James F. Wilhide, executors of the last will and testament of Josiah E. Wilhide, late of Frederick County, Maryland, deceased. Inventory of estate valued at $1,182.13, less debts of $421.34, leaving a balance for distribution of $710.79. Distributed according to will of testator, viz: --To Julia A. Wilhide, widow, the whole balance for and during her life or widowhood, personal property appraised at $118.25, and cash of $592.54. From the Frederick News Post newspaper of March, 1958: "SIX HORSE CHIME TEAM---George W. Wilhide, Lantz, familiarly known as the 'Potato man' brought this picture to the News-Post showing his father, the late Josiah (Shy) Wilhide and his six-horse team of matched greys. Wilhide is shown on the lead rein horse. Standing is Harvey Wilhide and sitting on the lazy board is Michael Wilhide, both deceased sons of the elder Wilhide. The picture was taken in 1905 on the site now occupied by O'Toole's Garage, Thurmont. George Wilhide recalled that in 1907 a parade was held in Thurmont for President Theodore Roosevelt. 'My father turned the horses and wagon around in the square' he said, 'and it was loaded with men and boys he had picked up traveling down the road.' The elder Wilhide died in 1915. One of the horses on the team, a mare, lived for 38 years, George Wilhide said. The team was called a chime team for each set of harness was decked with three-bell chimes." From the Frederick Post of Tuesday, February 2, 1960: "Editor's Note---Nicholas Yinger, while hunting deer in the vicinity of Lantz in early December came across the old residence, pictured above, which apparently has been uninhabited for some time. He showed the snapshots of the old property to Jean Yingling, who was inspired to write the article below. The old house is on property belonging to Dr. M. Franklin Birely of Thurmont. It is high up (about 1,304 feet above sea level) on Little Piney Mountain near Lantz, Maryland 81. Big Owens Creek and the Western Maryland railroad tracks, also called Wertenbaker Hill, at the western end of Eyler's Valley. The last tenants treated the place so badly that it hardly paid to repair it. They used parts of the building for firewood. Once unoccupied, it was soon the prey to vandals. Because of inaccessibility and no electric current, it had little appeal for present day living. The history of the old house could not be learned. The best informed man in the neighborhood, George Washington Wilhide, 85 years old, widely known as the 'Potato Man,' seemed to know more about the property than anyone else. He said his father, Josiah Wilhide, was raised there. He fought in the Civil War and died in 1915. So, the house has stood there for much longer than a century."
