His occupation is listed as laborer. Moved from Illinois to Howard County, Iowa in 1854, travelling by covered wagon drawn by ox teams. Arrived in New Oregon, IA on August 8, 1854. Settled on a homestead on what is now known as Mitchell Creek. In 1855, the family moved to Osage, Iowa, where Josiah worked for a Land Office. He then moved back to the farm. On May 17, 1856, Josiah purchased land in Howard County from John and Sophia Fields for $27.50; the land was described as the SE corner of the NW 1/4 of the SE 1/4 of section 3, T98, R11W of the 5th_______, thence west 32 rods, thence south 55 rods, thence 32 rods, thence about 55 rods to the place of _____ commencing being 11 acres. In 1860, the family moved to New Oregon. He is found in the 1860 census in New Oregon, Howard County, IA. His occupation is listed as farmer. In 1862, they sold the farm and bought a home on the bank of the Turkey River at which time Josiah did auctioneering and played the violin. In 1864, Josiah travelled to the gold fields of CA, ID, and MT. The men from New Oregon who joined the Company to look for gold were: Frank Mead, Hank Ingram, Walt Schofield, A. M. Fellows, Edward Chapin, Bob Pierce, Albert Merry, Bill Lolzenger, Tom McCray, and Mr. Shook. The Company left New Oregon on May 4, 1864 and arrived in Boise, ID on August 8, 1864. In the Spring of 1865, the Company left Boise and travelled to Helena, MT. There, Josiah struck gold. One of the mines, near Helena, was named after his daughter, Delphine. They returned to New Oregon in the Fall of 1867. In 1868, Josiah travelled to Chicago, IL, where he sold and traded his stock. He returned to Cresco, IA, and opened a store. Cresco was located about 1 1/2 miles from New Oregon. In 1869, he closed the store. In the 1870 census, Josiah is listed as a bee keeper. After Bessie was born, Josiah contracted consumption (tuberculosis) and traveled to Colorado to live with his daughter Delphine, who was then living in Rosita, CO. A brief obituary in the Cresco newspaper stated he had died in Silver Cliff, CO, of mountain fever and kidney failure. His family, of New Oregon, survived him. The obituary was submitted by J. W. Van Orman of Rosita, CO.
