Description	:	Josiah H. Hunter (also known as Henry or Hawk) came to Cass County in 1882 and worked the land which is now the site of the town of Massena. He was born in Henderson County, Illinois on May 3, 1859. He was the son of John and Eliza Hine Hunter, natives respectively of Kentucky and Ohio. Hunter (also known as Henry or Hawk) came to Cass County in 1882 and worked the land which is now the site of the town of Massena. He was born in Henderson County, Illinois on May 3, 1859. He was the son of John and Eliza Hine Hunter, natives respectively of Kentucky and Ohio. He and Anna Kate Erickson were united in marriage on August 31, 1893 in Villisca, Iowa, home of Ann's brother, Gustave Erickson. Anna had lived with her family on a farm three miles north of Massena and taught country school, walking to her school, then known as "White Cloud School." Anna came to America when seh was five years old and settled in Illinois. Attracted by land at eigh dollars an acre, she and her brothers, Gustave and Andrew, bought the farm north of Massena. They purchased 240 acres in Massena Township in 1897, and this farm was in the family until it was sold by Ralph in 1973. Henry Hunter died July 25, 1908, leaving his widow with a twelve-year-old daughter and a ten-year-old son. She rented the farm to Casteels and moved into the big house owned by Scotts, later purchased by Slocum. They graduated from Massena High School in 1914 and 1916. Florence attended the University of Iowa and graduated from that institution with a B. A. degree. She became principal of Massena High School, a position she held until her marriage in 1922 to Cyril Evan Farrand. She had met him at the University. He was at that time the instructor in the chemistry department of Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon. Eager to live in California, Cyril accepted a position in Long Beach as science instructor in Polytechnic High School where he remained until his death in 1979. Ralph Hunter graduated from UCLA and accepted a position in Jefferson Junior High School, Long Beach, as mathematics instructor. He remained there until his retirement. Each summer vacation he would drive back and work in the Farmers Savings Bank. He died September 16, 1979. Florence, at age 88 in 1986, remained active and busy. Her two children, Jo Anne Garrett and Hunter Evan Farrand, lived nearby her and visited her frequently.
