Description	:	Josiah is the son of Luke Bonney and Eunice (Hinmman) Bonney. Husband of Orpha (Stannard) Bonney. Married 20 May 1841 Rochester, Iowa his father died when he was two and a half years old. and when he was eight years of age, his mother married again, and it became necessary that he should find another home. At the age of 21, he turned his face westward, and arrived in Cass County, Illinois, almost penniless. the next year, he formed a partnership with B.B. Husband of Orpha (Stannard) Bonney. At the age of 21, he turned his face westward, and arrived in Cass County, Illinois, almost penniless. the next year, he formed a partnership with B.B. Rew, a man with a capital no greater than his own. The purchased on credit a small stock of goods in St. Louis. this stock they brought to Rochester, Iowa, three miles below Keosauqua, on the ninth day of June, 1839. In the fall, they were able to pay for their stock, and Mr. Rew started for St. Louis to make further purchases. In the early days of the Territory, when the political parties were in formation, Mr. Bonney took a more active part in the organization of the Democratic Party than perhaps any other person in the county. For his zeal, he was awarded with the nomination by his party for the office of Sheriff, 1841-42. He was a member of the Territorial Legislature in 1844, Sheriff again in 1845-46. After Iowa became a state, he was elected Clerk of the District Court. In 1849 and 1850, he was Secretary fo state, Under Governor Ansel Briggs.
