One of his sons James Elkanah Hirtle married Bertha Winters and they too raised their family on a farm In Upper Branch (four girls, Nellie, Lulu, Marguerite and Greta) Greta married and stayed in Upper Branch. Joseph is listed on the 1871 Census and Joseph and Abigail's last child was born in 1877. But Joseph died sometime after 1877 and before 1881 as Abigail is listed as head of the household on the 1881 Census. I believe Josiah "Joseph" is buried in an unmarked grave in Lone Pine Cemetery and his wife who died many years later in buried in Saint Michael's Cemetery, Petite Rivière Bridge, Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia, Canada. I remember my Grandmother liked to drive to Petite Rivière and then on to Green Bay in the summers to visit her Grandmother's grave and the place where the "Winters" came from. When her sister Nellie came home from the States all the sisters would go together to visit the Parents and Grandparents graves. They would make a day trip of it; finding someone to open the Church for them in Upper Branch, visiting the Church and the Lone Pine Cemetery, then driving down to Petite Rivière to the Cemetery and then on a little further down the road to spend some time at the beach at Green Bay. Nellie, Lulu, Margaret and Greta grew up on Elkanah Hirtle's farm in Upper Branch on a private road that is in behind the property now known as Civic # 1340. Their farm was a half a mile off the Monk Road on a private lane that is now abandoned and the hay fields and pasture has grown over and is very difficult to find the location of the house, their well and barns. Greta moved just a short distance down the road to waht is now Civic # 1150 and her Mother left the old farm and moved in with Greta when she became to old to live on her own. Greta's Mom died and then later her husband died; but Greta stayed on at the farm until late in life when she moved to the Senior's Apartments in New Germany. She drove for years and years anywhere she wanted to go but never ever bothered to get her beginners license and go through the process of getting a driver's license. This is but one of many fond memories of my Aunt Greta, Aunt Marguerite and Aunt Nellie. And although I never got to meet any of my Great Grandfather Hirtle or his Father I have walked through the same field they had cultivated and cared for those many years before.
