The twins both died when just a few months old. Muscatine Journal - Monday, April 3, 1905 - The funeral services for Josiah Whitmer were held Saturday April 1 at the Sugar Creek Presbyterian church. The pall bearers were Mr Whitmer's four sons, Andrew, George, Gibson, and William and the two sons-in-law, Chas Dice and Albert Straub. The service was largely attended. The interment was in the Whitmer cemetery. Rev McAuley read the following obituary in connection with the service: Mr. Josiah Whitmer was born in Crawford county, Ohio, May 7, 1930. He came to Iowa in 1849 and settled on a farm in Sugar Creek township, where he had resided continuously for 56 years. On Oct. 6, 1859, he married Miss Mary J Ocheltree, of Tipton. To them were born 8 children, five sons and three daughters, two of whom have passed away. Morris died Sept 16, 1893 and Mrs Maggie Wagner March 21, 1892. Those remaining are: George, Sioux City; Andrew Springdale, Ark; Gibson, Primghar; William at home; Mrs Effie Dice, Tipton; and Mrs Lettie Straub, Cedar county. His companion passed away Oct 11, 1895. Mr Whitmer was a man who enjoyed the confidence and esteem of all who knew him. He belonged to that sturdy class of pioneer whose industry and perseverance have helped to develop and enrich our great state. For almost 57 years he has been prominent in the affairs of this township, the result of this activity is seen in the prosperity which has followed his labors. Mr. Whitmer was a man of strong endearments. He was intensely interested in the welfare of his children, whom he endeavored to impress with ennobling ideals. His domestic life was such that his children enjoyed his counsel and esteem. Mr. Whitmer’s death was due directly to injuries received while endeavoring to stop a runaway team last Saturday. A blood vessel in his brain was ruptured and he was hurt internally. He lingered until Thursday morning when his spirit took its flight to God. Thus one by one the men whose brain and brawn had transformed this prairie wilderness into modern homesteads are being called away. Besides the children already mentioned, Mr Whitmer leaves two sisters: Mrs Harmon of Neal, Kansas and Mrs Marquardt of Lawton. Muscatine Journal and News-Tribune - Wednesday, January 1, 1936 - Wilton — Mrs. Minnie Dice received word of the death of her brother-in-law, George R. Whitmer, a prominent Sioux City business man and former local resident, which occurred at his home Monday afternoon. Mr. Whitmer was a native of Cedar county, son of Mr. and Mrs. Josiah Whitmer, pioneer settlers, and was educated in the rural schools and the old Wilton college. He had served as state representative from the llth district. His wife was the former Fannie Morrison of Cedar county. W.W. Whitmer of Cedar county is a brother and Mrs. Charles Dice and Mrs. Lottie Straub are sisters.
