Description	:	Civil War veteran Private, Co. H, 3rd Massachusetts Infantry (Apr. 1861 to Jul. 1861) Seaman, U.S. Navy (Oct. 1861 to May 1864) The son of Josiah S. and Betsey (Parker) Hammond, who were born at Carver, MA and Plympton, MA respectively. Military Service: Josiah, a 21-year-old Shoemaker from Plympton, enlisted April 16, 1861 and was mustered as a Private in Co. H of the 3rd Massachusetts Infantry on April 23rd. H, 3rd Massachusetts Infantry (Apr. 1861 to Jul. 1861) Seaman, U.S. Navy (Oct. 1861 to May 1864) The son of Josiah S. and Betsey (Parker) Hammond, who were born at Carver, MA and Plympton, MA respectively. Military Service: Josiah, a 21-year-old Shoemaker from Plympton, enlisted April 16, 1861 and was mustered as a Private in Co. H of the 3rd Massachusetts Infantry on April 23rd. His regiment sailed from Boston on April 18th, arriving at Fortress Monroe on the 20th and for the next three months garrisoned the fort. The regiment also took part in the dismantling and destruction of the Gosport Naval Yard to prevent armaments from falling into Confederate hands. After a three-month rest Josiah enlisted again on Oct. 15, 1861, but this time as a Seaman with the Navy. For the next three years he served aboard the U.S. North Carolina, Bienville, Monogahela, and Pensacola before his discharge on May 10, 1864. Post War: Josiah married Celeia Bisbee prior to 1865 when their daughter Myrtis was born. She was followed by Rachel M. in 1867; William Penn in 1869; and Arthur B. in 1878. Other children, for whom dates of birth are unknown, included Grace E., Fred W., and August F. Josiah was 73 years, five months, and seven days old and married when he died of a Cerebral Hemorrhage at the Soldiers Home in Chelsea and was interred in the family lot at the Congregational Church cemetery at Plympton, MA.
