Description	:	Josiah's father was disheartened by a rift in his family in MD, and when he heard tales of gold strikes in CA he decided to take his wife and children west to start a new life. That was in 1848 and Josiah was about nine yrs. old, when they stopped in what is now Belington in Barbour Co. WV just to rest and visit relatives. Read More	Josiah's father was disheartened by a rift in his family in MD, and when he heard tales of gold strikes in CA he decided to take his wife and children west to start a new life. That was in 1848 and Josiah was about nine yrs. old, when they stopped in what is now Belington in Barbour Co. WV just to rest and visit relatives. Something about the area must have appealed to his father, as he changed his mind about the west and settled his family there instead. What I have learned of Josiah's life comes from county records and by compiling info from several different books. Known facts written about his father, William P. Wilson help me understand the family dynamics that played a part in shaping his life. On June 22, 1862 he married Elizabeth Teter, then just two months later on Aug. 23, 1862 he enlisted in the Union Army as a PVT in Co. F of the 15th W.Va. Infantry Regiment. His discharge date was June 14, 1865, having served 2 yrs. 9 mos. 21 days. At face value these are just Civil War records, but he and his family were of German Baptist faith so I can't imagine what struggles and hardships he must have endured to sway him from his beliefs. A publication called "West Virginia History" volume 50, 1991 contains an article written by John W. Shaffer titled "Loyalties In Conflict: Union and Confederate Sentiment In Barbour County" explains it better than I can. He states, "The willingness of the twelve German Baptists to renounce pacifism clearly indicates that the precepts of their church paled in comparison to the wartime crisis." He is speaking of the twelve Brethren men in Barbour county that served in the war, and of that number Josiah and three of his brothers were included, all serving the Union. Uncertain of the exact reasons but assuming that the family's role in the underground railroad, serving in the war, and his fathers mistreatment at Libby Prison weighed heavy in his heart, he immersed himself deeper into his faith. By 1884 he was listed in "The Brethren Almanac" as a minister for The Valley River Brethren Church, remaining on the list until his death in 1923. During those roughly forty years of service Josiah performed the marriages for several of his grandchildren. At the present time the last family marriage record found is for a grandson in 1919 when he was 80 yrs old. Signed by: Josiah S.
