Description	:	JACKSON, Neb. -- Joy A. Birkley, 72, Jackson died peacefully Friday, Jan. 27, 2006, at a Sioux City hospital surrounded by her family. Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Salem Lutheran Church in Ponca, Neb., with the Rev. Kathy Wicks officiating. Burial will be in Silver Ridge Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, with a prayer service at 6 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Mohr Funeral Home in Ponca. Arrangements are under the direction of Mohr Funeral Home in Ponca. Joy was born Dec. 10, 1933, in Homer, Neb., to Ernest and Hildred (Burcham) Lieber. She attended country school and graduated from Waterbury (Neb.) High School in 1950. She attended Wayne State College and earned her teaching degree. She taught school for two years at Harmony Hills School in rural Allen, Neb. On Sept. 7, 1952, she married Waldo L. Birkley in Ponca, Neb. The couple farmed all their lives and retired in 1987. She was an active community person. She earned the Outstanding Homemaker's Award in May 1978. She was a 4-H leader, was active in the Extension Club, the Garden Club and numerous other activities. She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Ponca. She loved bird watching, gardening, baking, cheating while playing cards and her beloved family. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 53 years, Wally; a daughter and her husband, Linda and Gary; a son and his wife, Lowell and Susan; five special grandchildren, Stacey, Travis, Derek, Nathan, Reid and Drew; three brothers and their wives, Herman and Eleanor, Delbert and Sharie, and Darrel and Sue; a sister and her husband, Laveta and Gene; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
