Spitzer Funeral Home, 320 6th Ave. SE. is in charge of arrangements. Joy was born to James and Floranell (Darnell) Harper on August 10, 1946 in Atlanta, GA. She grew up in the Atlanta area and married John Chewning in 1963. To this marriage was born two daughters, Candy and Taffy. Joy and John were later divorced. Joy worked various secretarial positions until she joined the US Army in 1981 and her and her daughters moved to Colorado Springs for her first assignment at Ft. Carson as the company clerk. She spent three years at Ft. Carson before she became an Army Recruiter and moved to Sioux Falls, SD. After her promotion to Staff Sergeant and doing very well as a recruiter, she was sent to Brookings as Station Commander of the Army Recruiting Station. While there she was very proud to be able to offer the first salute to her daughter, Taffy and son-in-law Mark upon their commission in the Air Force. In 1990 she became Station Commander for a larger station in Houghton, MI. A year following, she decided to leave the Army and received an honorable discharge. She was always very proud of being a veteran. In recent years she enjoyed spending time with her daughters and their families. She absolutely adored her grandsons and we will all miss her so much. Grateful for having shared her life are two daughters, Candy Chewning of Sioux Falls; Taffy (Chewning) Howard and her husband Mark of Rapid City, SD with her two sons, Austin and Matthew, mother, Floranell Parker, sister, Jean Harper of Forrest Park, GA, two brothers, Tony Ethridge and Wayne Parker and a niece Terri Brooks of Seattle, WA. She is preceded in death by her husband, Willard Schmidt, father, James Harper, stepfather, Colon Parker and brother, Vincent Parker.
