Description	:	Joy Paisley Leonard, passed away September 18, 2013, at Genesis HealthCare Center in Salisbury after several months of declining health. Born in the tiny village of Bertrand, Nebraska, she was 8th of the ten children of Lewis M. and Marnie Quiller Paisley. An employee of Purina Corporation, her father supervised the construction of flour mills as far away as Texas, often moving the family as projects were finished and new ones began. Read More	Joy Paisley Leonard, passed away September 18, 2013, at Genesis HealthCare Center in Salisbury after several months of declining health. Born in the tiny village of Bertrand, Nebraska, she was 8th of the ten children of Lewis M. and Marnie Quiller Paisley. An employee of Purina Corporation, her father supervised the construction of flour mills as far away as Texas, often moving the family as projects were finished and new ones began. Joy graduated with honors from East St Louis High School and Summers College of Commerce as war clouds developed in Europe. Like thousands of other young girls, she was recruited by the rapidly expanding War Department in Washington as a stenographer in 1941. A transfer in 1944 took her to Alaska where she served until assigned to Frankfurt, Germany, in 1946. There she married Technical Sergeant Robert J. Leonard, March 5, 1947. Returning to the states, they moved a dozen times across the country and to Japan. After Major Leonard retired in 1964, Joy served as secretary to Salisbury Mayor Wiley Lash and finally 13 years as Federal Court Stenographer until her retirement in 1979. She was recognized for volunteer work with the Rowan Public Library in 1977 and received the Susan J. Gloeckler Memorial Award for service with the Humane Society of Rowan County in 1999. She was an active member of Coburn Memorial United Methodist Church for 50 years serving as Sunday School teacher, secretary, and elsewhere as needed. After Major Leonard died September 6, 2008, Joy moved to Oak Park Retirement Center in Salisbury. Left to cherish her memory are friends in the community as well as each member of Coburn UMC and Oak Park Retirement Center. Although scattered widely across the country, a number of nieces and nephews survive. Of these, Mary MacIntosh (Don), Paul Godt (Sara) and Brenda McGee (Gerald) stayed in close contact and remained very special to Joy. Funeral service is at 10 a.m., Tuesday, September 24, 2013, at Coburn Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Doc Warner, Rev. Dr. Larry W. Bost and Rev. Anna Mandelstamm officiating. Family and friends will gather in the church fellowship hall immediately afterwards for dinner. Burial will be at 1 p.m. at the National Cemetery on Statesville Blvd. Memorials may be made to Coburn Memorial United Methodist Church, 901 South Church St, Salisbury, NC, 28144, or to the Humane Society of Rowan County, PO Box 295, Salisbury, NC 28145.
