Joy was born September 6, 1928, near Cincinnati, IA, the daughter of Homer and Grace Ross. She graduated from Centerville High School in 1945 and started teaching at a rural school near Corydon. Joy was born September 6, 1928, near Cincinnati, IA, the daughter of Homer and Grace Ross. She graduated from Centerville High School in 1945 and started teaching at a rural school near Corydon. She later taught in rural schools in present-day Altoona and Clive, and SW of the Des Moines Airport. She attended Northeast Missouri State Teacher's College (now Truman State University) in Kirksville, MO, and graduated with a bachelor's degree from Drake University in 1959. After graduation, she became a teacher in the Des Moines School District. She taught 1st and 2nd grades at Perkins, Wright, Greenwood, and Moore Elementary schools until she retired in 1991. She was married to Richard Dean "Dick" Coe on June 7, 1953, at the University Christian Church in Des Moines. In 1957, they built a house in Urbandale, IA, where they lived for the next 58 years. They have one daughter, Nancy. Joy was deeply devoted to her family and friends and enjoyed spending time with them. She was always quick to help anyone in need. Joy was also passionate about her students and loved by the families of the children she taught. Her hobbies included studying the stock market; she was a member of Hightower Investment Club. Joy and Dick moved to Nevada, IA, in 2015 to be closer to family. She resided briefly at Windsor Manor Assisted Living prior to moving to Story County Senior Care. Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Dick; daughter, Nancy (John) Clough of Nevada, IA; grandchildren Andrew and Elyse Clough, at home; brothers Paul (Anna) Ross of Cincinnati, IA, and Kenneth (Ruby) Ross of Unionville, MO; nieces Janet (Greg) Brodie of Ames, IA, and Carol Ross, Unionville; and nephew, Ronald Ross, of St. Louis, MO. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Jesse. Memorial services will be held at Iles-Westover Chapel in Des Moines 11:00 am Saturday, November 19, 2016. Online condolences may be left at www.ilescares.com. In leu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be given to Children and Families of Iowa or Iowa Public Television.
