A Memorial Mass will be at 10:30 AM, Saturday, March 3, 2012 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton with Rev. Dan Smith officiating. Burial of Joyce's cremated remains will be in the Vangen Lutheran Cemetery, Mission Hill, SD, at approximately 1:00 PM. Visitations will resume one hour prior to services at the church. Joyce was born November 23, 1930 to Grace and Charles Brenna in Woonsocket, SD. She was one of 6 children. After her father's death, when Joyce was 13 the family moved to Mission Hill for one year before moving to Yankton. Joyce attended school in Yankton and graduated from Yankton High School in 1948. Joyce was one of the first Girl Staters and traveled to Mitchell by train. She was also up for Arickara Homecoming princess. Joyce worked as a bookkeeper for Keatings Creamery and also for Dr. Don Dendinger. Joyce married Walt Pfeiffer on December 28, 1950. To this union 3 children were born: Mike, Cathy and Jeff. After being divorced, Joyce raised her 3 children on her own. She went to college as a non-traditional student at Mount Marty College to get her teaching degree. Joyce graduated on May 27, 1966, the same day her oldest son Mike graduated from 8th grade at Sacred Heart School. Joyce taught 5th graders at Lincoln Elementary for 29 years under Bob Walser. Joyce became a Catholic under the direction of Msgr. James Reilly, who had an impact on her life, and became a member of Sacred Heart Parish. She belonged to Catholic Daughters, the funeral committee, Delta Kappa Gamma, Retired Teachers, the Catholic Bridge Club and the Episcopal Bridge Club. She enjoyed her retirement years playing bridge, going to faculty lunches and being wither her immediate family, especially during the family Riverboat Day reunions. Joyce moved into The Bluffs Assisted Living apartments in February of 2009. She enjoyed the staff and friendships of other residents. As her Alzheimer's progressed Joyce moved into the Sister James Care Center on the Country Unit in October of 2010. She was loved and well cared for by the amazing staff. Joyce called it "home" whenever she had to leave for appointments. Joyce leaves behind her children: Mike (Anne Marie Neiss) Pfeiffer of Yorba Linda, CA, Cathy Zerfas of Yankton, SD, and Jeff (Jane) Pfeiffer of Rocklin, CA; her sister, Fran (Gene "Beansie") Anderson of Denver, CO; her grandchildren: Charlie (Monica) Pfeiffer of Coconut Creek, FL, Karen (Rick) McMannis of Oroville, CA, Jenny Zerfas of Sioux Falls, SD, Mike (Sheena) Zerfas of Sioux Falls, SD, John Zerfas of Portland, OR, Angelina Neiss of Yorba Linda, CA; and her great-grandchildren: Sierra Rose McMannis of Oroville, CA, Isabella Zerfas of Sioux Falls, SD and Brooke Naber of Sioux Falls. She is preceded in death by her parents, Grace and Charles Brenna, her sister Marcene Buhrman in 2011, her twin brothers Leo and LeRoy Brenna, her brother Robert and her infant brother Charles.
