Description	:	Joyce Elaine Gunderson Ames was born September 2, 1926 to John and Myrtle Gunderson in Michigan City, North Dakota. One of six children, Joyce grew up living the life of a small town farm girl. Joyce came to Washington during World War II to train as an enemy aircraft spotter. Later, while working for Northwest Airlines, she met and married Charles Ames. They became part owners and lived at Flaming Geyser Park on the Green River. Soon their family began. Read More	Joyce Elaine Gunderson Ames was born September 2, 1926 to John and Myrtle Gunderson in Michigan City, North Dakota. One of six children, Joyce grew up living the life of a small town farm girl. Joyce came to Washington during World War II to train as an enemy aircraft spotter. Later, while working for Northwest Airlines, she met and married Charles Ames. They became part owners and lived at Flaming Geyser Park on the Green River. Soon their family began. One year and two days later, a second child arrived. The river flooded the every year, and the park would have to rebuild. The park was eventually sold and later became Flaming Geyser State Park. After selling the park, the family moved to Auburn. Several years later, they moved again, this time to Tacoma. While there, they built and operated Charlie's Fish Bar, a popular drive-in restaurant built over the water in Old Tacoma. Joyce and Charles later divorced and the Fish Bar was sold. Joyce worked in the restaurant business and as a travel agent for several years, then started working in a child care center. She eventually went to Fort Lewis where she ran a day care center. She then went to live with her son in Kirkland, where she was a member of Bothel Sons of Norway and loved playing Pinochle and Scrabble. Four years later, she moved to Olympia to be closer to her daughter. As time went on, she needed assisted living, and then, fulltime care. Joyce died peacefully in her sleep on July 18, 2017, after a long illness. Joyce is preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Lucille Gunderson, Ruth Carlson; and brothers, Orville and Warren Gunderson. Contributor: D. Loe (47757164)
