If going by old German etiquette, when two living kin owned matching first names , the rules required the younger to use a different name, genereally one of his possibly two middle names. Her brother, thus, would have used Kenneth, at family gatherings and in local records, to avoid confusion with the elder of two living George Blumenscheins. Once the senior George had passed, the naming rules allowed the younger to switch to using George. The younger immediately did so, seen on his father's death certificate. His American friends and neighbors who were not Germanic, however, would have wanted to continue calling him Kenneth, so Kenneth George is seen on his gravestone and elsewhere.) From the obituary for Joyce, written by her own survivors: Her faith and love of family and music were defining pillars of her well-lived life. She had an innate musical gift, and although her family did not own an instrument when she was growing up, she was able to play piano by ear and learned note-reading by practicing on a piece of cardboard with drawn-on keys as a child. At the young age of 13, she started her post as Trinity Lutheran Church's pianist and organist, and she continued in this role for an astonishing 68 years. In 1945, Joyce married Wayne Lust. They shared six children and 55 years of marriage until his passing in 1999. Starting as high-school sweethearts, their relationship was a life-long love story for the ages. (See archives of the Mar. 21, 1945 issue of "The Spokane Daily Chronicle", page 16.) Why elope? Perhaps as she was still a high school senior, so her parents were likely to object? Her spouse, aka D. Wayne Lust, was young as well, just a year out of high school. The announcement gave the names of both parents in the fashion of the time, meaning that the mothers stayed anonymous ("Mr. and Mrs."), with George Blumenschein and Daniel Lust named as the bride's and groom's fathers, respectively. Her biological mother (Mary Morasch Blumenschein) passed away at her birth. The mother who raised her was Elizabeth (the second Mrs. George Blumenschein). Elizabeth's's obituary was in "The Spokesman Review", July 15,1999, p.23, citing 15 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. Joyce had almost as many, 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Joyce's children, as cited in her own obituary, were: Connie (Steve) Taylor, Coeur d'Alene, Dan (Sandee) Lust, Davenport, Deanna (Read) Smith, Spokane, Gayle Lust, Spokane, Randy (Char) Lust, Yakima, Jim (Michelle) Lust, Felton, DE. Son Dan Lust was named for both his father and grandfather. Her spouse Wayne's obituary told more. Besides fathering, he spent time as a farmer, had been employed by a company, plus, for many years, he managed the Endicott Grocery Store. Joyce was still living when he died. These included Harvey and Ray Blumenschein, with the obituary of brother Kenneth George Blumenschein giving more information (on p. 19 of the "The Spokesman Review" for Feb. 24, 1998). Kenneth had been born on the Blumenschein family's farm near Endicott, so Joyce would have been born there, as well. (He moved to Colfax to retire, with his wife, the former Hazel Schierman.) Joyce was not the only one in her family to marry a Lust. One of her brother Kenneth's daughters had done so as well. (She became Lila Lust, Davenport, WA. A different daughter, Lola Gillespie, was of Pullman. Kenneth had had six grandchildren by his two daughters by Feb., 1999.) Joyce made it to age 91. Her caretaking mother, Elizabeth, died at an equally incredible 92 and had also belonged to Trinity Lutheran in nearby Colfax ("The Spokesman Review", July 15,1999, p.23, cited 15 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.) The mother who reared her, Elizabeth, may have been friends with or related to Joyce's biological mother? Elizabeth was advanced for her time period, graduating from high school, something not true of the majority. She did so in Endicott. She married George Blumensheim in Endicott two years later, in 1927, before Joyce had finished her first year as an infant. Usually, Lutheranism marks people who immigrated to the States as from places where Lutheranism was still the official state religion, meaning the rulers decided on the majority religion, with Lutheranism adopted, for example, by the Prussia Kaiser and Scandinavian nobles. There were some interesting exceptions. RUSSIAN-GERMAN ANCESTRY. The Russian-Germans were Germanic-speakers who had emigrate to Russia several hundred years before moving again, to the States or Canada. Growing up, being musical, Joyce would have known about the most famed result of the Russian-Germans coming to "Amerika". That would have been the band director of TV fame, Lawrence Welk. The isolation of their farming villages back in Russia was said to make music a great way to pass the time in the long winters. The first sets of German-speaking farmers had moved into the Ukraine frontier at the invitation of Catharine the Great (a spelling closer to that used in the old county would be Ekaterina, or, for us, Catarina). A relative of her father was Conrad S. Scheuerman, of Lancaster, Washington. He gave an oral history on June 30, 1969, helped in this by Richard Scheuerman, who also has testimonies near that time from relatives of Joyce's two mothers. Times were difficult for the German families because less and less land was available for farming as the size of families had increased over the generations....Sometimes people would make the trip by sleigh to Saratov which was the big city on the Volga about forty miles away. There were wolves in the forest and hills that were a threat during winter travel so sometimes a young colt was tied behind and would have to be cut away and sacrificed if ever they attacked.... things changed for the worse in my parents‟ time and when I was young. Our family decided to go to America in 1907." "We got on the train there [Saratov] and went all the way to Libau, Poland where we crossed the border. We then continued on the railroad to Bremen in Germany where we caught the boat that took us across the ocean to New York. We had relatives in Canada and took the railroad to Medicine Hat in Alberta, and then continued on to Irwin, Canada. But we continued on to Endicott and arrived here on July 25, 1907." "Our families are related way back, Mrs. Adam P. Morasch might know what happened to Henry B.‟s [Scheuerman] sisters. My wife‟s grandfather was named Henry, her father was Conrad. My father was named John and my grandfather was Phillip. My mother was Catherine Blumenschein." COMMENT. Some historians say that, back in Russia, the policy for so-called "Russian-Germans" was to let each religion form its own villages, not mixed together with the other religions, as had been common in certain "Germanies", precise mixes depending upon the local rulers. This separation practice of the Russians kept different migrating religious groups, Jewish, Lutheran, Mennonite, Catholic, even thouhg migrating together, apart once inside their new home country, not to mix again until in the States. They preserved whatever had been their old Germanic dialect, old music, old food recipes, etc. Joyce's caretaking mother, Elizabeth Litzenberger Blumenschein, was born in Schoenfield, Russia, around 1907, so pre-Russian Revolution. Schoenfield could be an "Anglicized" (Britishized) spelling of Schönfeld? If so, it was a Mennonite colony, not Lutheran, inside a county-like place called Alexandrovsk. Its larger province of Ekaterinoslav had been named for Catharine the Great, but is now called Zaporizhia Oblast. It is part of the Ukraine, a "breadbasket" region known for agriculture, formerly inside the Soviet Union/Russia, but now its own country. Her Litzenbergers were late arrivals. HER FATHER"S BIRTHPLACE. He was born, not in the Ukraine, but in Russia proper, in what is now the Saratov Oblast, named for the large town of Saratov that acted much as one of our county seats. The German language did not have a J-sound, but pronounced each "J" as a "Y". Thus, the actual town name was spelled iferent ways, a spellig once use there being"Jagodnaja Poljana", but its "sound-it-out" spelling took over once here in the States. Once the Volga Germans were living amidst those descended of British immigrants, the spelling turned into "Yagodmaya Polyana". His people were also known as "Volga Germans", the important Volga River being to the south of their town. Their German name for themselves was "der Russlanddeutschen".
