Joyce died Saturday, February 29, 2020 at the Tabitha Journey House in Lincoln. Joyce Marlene Splittgerber was born on October 17, 1933 in Allen, Nebraska to Elmer and Ella (Bass) Kingston. She was baptized on March 21, 1940 at the Methodist Church in Allen, NE and confirmed on December 14, 1956 in the St. John’s Lutheran church in Pilger. Joyce attended country school, rural Allen until 1940 when the family moved to Wayne. She graduated from Wayne Prep School in 1951. She married Gilbert Splittgerber on August 23, 1951 at Grace Lutheran Church in Wayne. After school Joyce cleaned houses and worked at a café in Wayne where she ended up meeting the love of her life, Gilbert. Joyce joined Grace Lutheran Church in Wayne by affirmation of faith after receiving catechism instruction from Reverend Bernthal in 1951. She knew and loved her Lord Jesus and desired that her children and grandchildren would also. Joyce was very active in teaching Sunday school; she had a teacher’s heart with the love of teaching children. She was an active member of several homemakers groups and woman's bible studies in Wayne and Plainview. Joyce traded in her roller skates, for ballroom dancing after meeting Gilbert. Joyce and Gilbert got married on August 23, 1951 at Grace Lutheran Church in Wayne. Joyce and Gilbert farmed and raised dairy, poultry, and livestock from 1951 to 1964 in Wayne County and from 1964 to 1998 in Pierce and Antelope County near Plainview. The couple later moved to Plainview in 1964, where they decided to raise their family. Joyce developed a home based business of home decor items of plaster craft and wood which she crafted herself from start to finish from plaster, wood, concrete, and paint. She then marketed her wares through home parties and retail stores in towns throughout Northeast Nebraska for nearly 30 years using a school bus she retrofitted for displaying her creations. Joyce and Gilbert were also in a monthly card club of the same 6 couples for over 60 years. Joyce has resided primarily at Edgewood Vista in Norfolk, Brookdale in Wayne, Country House in Lincoln, and Tabitha Journey Hospice House in Lincoln since 2017, as she has courageously battled the progression of her Alzheimer’s disease. She was member at Zion Lutheran Church, Plainview. Survivors include spouse Gilbert Splittgerber of Lincoln, children Jacquelyn (Dave) Fredrickson of Lincoln, Paul (Sally) Splittgerber of Norfolk, Brian Splittgerber of Hickman, Karen Splittgerber of Norfolk, 9 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, siblings Gayle (Harold) Flesner of Aurora, CO, Gary (Diane) Kingston of Niantic, CT. She was preceded in death by parents Elmer and Ella, sisters Mona Faye Meyer, Shirley Fletcher, and brother Lyle Kingston. Organist will be Nancy Schlote. Congregational hymns will be “Near My God To Thee”, “Jesus Loves Me”, and “Savior, Again To Thy Dear Name.” Casket bearers will be Joyce's grandson’s Tony Splittgerber, Kelly Splittgerber, Ryan Splittgerber, Aaron Splittgerber, Nathan Fredrickson, Michael Splittgerber, and Paul Splittgerber.
