Joyce Marlene Watson was born September 6, 1931 at Beatrice to Lee and Ruth (Whitman) Smedley. She graduated from high school at Pawnee City in 1947. Joyce Marlene Watson was born September 6, 1931 at Beatrice to Lee and Ruth (Whitman) Smedley. She graduated from high school at Pawnee City in 1947. During high school, Joyce played tenor sax with a local dance band, traveling to many area communities to provide Saturday night entertainment. She received her teaching certificate from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1951. While attending college she was a member of the University Band. Her first teaching job found her in Holdrege. The following year she accepted a teaching position in Mitchell. Summers were spent working in a Renzelman's music store. It was at this time she met Sioux County Rancher Kenneth Watson. They were married August 15, 1954 and made their first home at Dr. C.R. Watson's North Ranch. Ken and Joyce leased various Sioux County ranches for several years, including the Upper 33 ranch. They purchased the Raymond and Alice Larson ranch in 1967, where they lived together until Ken's death in 1991. This land was ‘home' for Joyce and following moves to Harrison and Chadron she returned to live at the ranch in 2003. Joyce taught music several years in the Harrison Grade School. She was very proud to direct several operetta productions including ‘HMS Pinafore' in 1963, ‘The Mikado' in 1965 and ‘Rough and Ready' in 1972. Music was always an important part of her life. They joined the Catholic Church in the late 1990's and became very active with the Altar Society of the Church of the Nativity in Harrison. Recently, she was a member of the Sioux County Planning Commission, and Running Water Ranch Coalition Band. She took pride in the purebred red Angus herd she and Ken had established and continued running cow/calf pairs with her daughter and son-in-law on the ranch. She is survived by: her daughters Kathryn Lea Griesse of Harrison and Karen Kay Smith of Broken Bow; grandchildren Marlena Griesse, Laurie, Kenneth, Kyle and Rebecca Smith; and brother Gary Smedley of Colorado Springs, Colo. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. The Chadron Record
