Description	:	Giovanni Battista Leandri was born on the island of Sardegna, Italy, and eventually made his way to Mexican Alta California, where he arrived at Monterey as a 23-year-old seaman in 1827. He soon relocated to Los Angeles where he was known by the Spanish version of his name - Juan Bautista. He petitioned for title to a lot on the southeast corner of the Plaza de los Angeles that was awarded to him in 1836 (Los Angeles City Archives). He soon relocated to Los Angeles where he was known by the Spanish version of his name - Juan Bautista. He petitioned for title to a lot on the southeast corner of the Plaza de los Angeles that was awarded to him in 1836 (Los Angeles City Archives). Juan Bautista married María Francisca Uribes y Cota at Mission San Gabriel on February 9, 1839 (SG Marriage 01888), and later that same year he became a Mexican citizen. In 1840 he bought Rancho Los Coyotes from Juan José Nieto y Morillo and renamed it "La Buena Esperanza" (Good Hope), but it was still generally known as Rancho Los Coyotes. He died on his rancho in December 1843. "Padre Esténega refuses burial [in Old Calvary] because Leandri had not paid his tithes; but the prefect decides against the padre" (quote appears in Bancroft, H. History of California, vol. IV, pg. 633). Three years after his death Francisca married Francisco Ocampo (born 1822, Tepic, Mexico) at the Los Angeles Plaza Church on November 19, 1846. Francisca lost the house on the plaza in a tax sale on December 20, 1872, that was finalized February 3, 1874 (Los Angeles City Archives). There was no evidence found that Juan and Francisca had any children. --- "After Leandri had died, Lieutenant William Emory visited the adobe as a member of General Kearny's troops. In his log for 7 January 1847 he notes: 'We came to the Coyotes, a rancheria (sic) owned by a rich widow lady, who had just married a handsome young fellow, who might well pass for her son.' He referred to Francisca Uribes de Leandri and her new husband, Francisco O'Campo from Tepic, Mexico, seven years her junior..." (Saddleback Ancestors: Rancho Families of Orange County, California)
