Cowell was born in Tompkins county, New York, June 24, 1822. His father was a Baptist preacher but lived on a farm and the son was trained in his youth to farm work which honorable occupation he successfully followed during the later years of his life. At the age of twenty he caught the western fever and emigrated to Ohio and later to Michigan where he lived on the frontier and for a while acted as scout for General Cass in an Indian war. For a while he was a citizen of Milwaukee, Wis., and was employed for a time in the service of the American Fur Company. He spent a brief time at Winnebago, Ill. in business with a lumber firm. At Rockford he was engaged in railroading for some six years. He finally drifted back to Wisconsin where he engaged in farming and merchandising for about six years. He came to Holton in 1857 and pre-emptied (sic) a farm a short distance west of town, and a year or two later purchased the farm south of town where he lived and prospered the remainder of his life. January 10, 1855, Judge Cowell was married to Miss Eliza Stork at Barton, Wis. To which union were born seven children two of them, Laura and Ella, died in infancy. The oldest daughter, Libbie became the wife of Robert Canfield and died in 1885. Besides the bereaved widow, there remains to mourn, Mrs. Joseph Seek and Mrs. Purdue of this county, Mrs. J. B. Harrison, of Hardin, Mo., and Miss Agnes Cowell who is with her mother at home. Judge Cowell was a prominent member of the Masonic Lodge of Holton and also of the Presbyterian church .... The old Judge got his title by being elected Probate Judge of this county in 1864. He served three terms as County Commissioner and one term as County Attorney, being the first free state man elected to that office ... an active member of the Democratic party .... The following is from Robert Sprague (49068729); 4th great nephew of Chauncey James Cowell. Chauncey James Cowell (b. 24 Jun 1822) is the 3rd great grandson of Edward Cowell (b. 1616 England) and Sarah Hobart (b. 1644 Hingham, Massachusetts). Edward Cowell came to Massachusetts about 1640 and settled in Boston. Also, Chauncey is a descendant of Thomas Rogers (b. 1571 England) who was on the Mayflower that anchored on 21 Nov 1620 at the Plymouth Colony, Mass.. NOTE: The lineage to Chauncey is from Thomas Rogers down to Chauncey's great grandmother, Sarah Young ( wife of great grandfather Joshua Cowell). Many records for Chauncey have his name as C. J. Cowell; C.T. Cowell; or C.W. Cowell. The reason for the disparity is due to the copperplate handwriting style used in the 1800's and the modern day interpretation of his written middle initial sometimes was incorrect due to this handwriting style. Chauncey's parents (Abraham Cowell & Betsey Curran) were married about 1800 in Coxsackie, Greene County, New York. They moved to North Spencer, Tioga, NY about 1805 - 1807 (at that time, North Spencer was called Huggtown). Chauncey's father was a Baptist preacher affiliated with the early church started by Rev Phineas Spaulding in North Spencer (part of North Spencer would become Danby, Tioga County, NY on Feb 22, 1811 and become Danby, Tompkins County in 1822). Chauncey (the youngest of 9 children) was raised on his parent's farm in North Spencer until he was about 10 years of age. The farm was 45 acres and in 1825 consisted of 12 cattle used for human consumption, 3 horses, 30 sheep, and 12 hogs. Chauncey's parents died when he was about ten years old. His oldest brother, John, passed away when Chauncey was eleven; and a sister, Diana died in the 1825 - 1830 timeframe. Chauncey and his sister, Mary (b. 18 Jul 1820), lived with an older sister, Nancy (b. 23 Jul 1809) and Nancy's husband John S. Woodruff in Spencer, NY until the early 1840's. NOTE: Chauncey had two other sisters: Deborah Cowell (b. 30 Jan 1805 1st H Horace Cowles and 2nd H with last name Andrews) and Anna Cowell (b. 8 Feb 1812). With the passing of his parents and two siblings, Chauncey's older brother, Joseph Cowell (b. 7 Oct 1813) left Spencer in the late 1830's and relocated to the Wisconsin Territory, receiving a land grant patent in June of 1839. This was followed by Chauncey and sister Nancy/family leaving Spencer in the early 1840's (Nancy/family ending up in Ridott, Illinois). Chauncey relocated to Washington County, Wisconsin in the late 1840's. He purchased 2 parcels of land, totaling 120 acres in Washington County on 1 Mar 1848, as part of the Public Land Sale of the Wisconsin Territory by the Milwaukee Land Office. Chauncey bought 80 acres situated in the East half of the South East quarter, of Section four, of Township eleven, North of Range nineteen East. He purchased another 40 acres situated in the South West quarter, of Section three, of Township eleven, North of Range nineteen East. In 1850, his real estate was valued at $675 and located near West Bend, Wisconsin. Chauncey's first marriage most likely occurred in Wisconsin, where he had 3 children with his wife, Sarah. Sarah passed away on Mar 20, 1853, at the age of 25, in Washington Co., WI; and all 3 of their children died young in Washington County. Chauncey's second wife was Eliza (Lizzie) Stork and they married on Jan 10, 1855 in Barton, Washington County, WI. Not long after their daughter Elizabeth was born ( 1 Feb 1856) in Washington County, the family moved to Holton, Jackson County, Kansas. Chauncey and Eliza had seven daughters (two died young: Laura and Ella). NOTE: Chauncey was the County Attorney for Calhoun County, Kansas in 1858. He is listed in the 1875 Kansas State Census Schedule 2 Agriculture, Jackson County with 617 acres, farm value of $18,000 (with acreage used as follows: 30 acres winter wheat; 120 acres corn; 8 acres barley; 54 acres oats; 130 acres prairie; 100 acres blue grass; 6 acres orchard; and one half acre Irish potatoes).
