For some time it has been feared by those in close touch with him that he would never be a well man, but throughout his illness he put up a determined fight. Funeral services for the deceased were conducted from the Baptist Church in Rison Friday afternoon, attended by a large crowd of friends of the family. Rev. Geo. F. Moody, a Baptist minister, and the Rev. B.F. Musser, pastor of the Methodist church conducted the funeral services. Interment was made in Greenwood cemetery. He is survived by his wife, six sons, as follows: E.F. of Fort Worth, Texas; Alton McMurtrey of Beaumont, Texas, J.E., Joe Ralph, and Milton McMurtrey of Rison; and three daughters as follows: Mrs.Lula Burkhart of Tullahoma, Tenn.; and Misses Margarite and Martha Louise McMurtrey of Rison; two brothers, Dr. J.S. McMurtrey and Atty. J.M. McMurtrey of Rison. Judge McMurtrey was born in Cleveland County August 22, 1851. He attended school at the Toledo academy during his boyhood days and after finishing his schooling taught for several years. He was married in 1875 to Miss Mollie Kendall, after whose death he was married to Miss Nora Cowan in 1896. In 1908 he was elected county judge and served two terms. It was during his last term that the present county courthouse was built. He also was justice of the peace for some years, was one of the best known surveyors in the county and at the time of his death he was a member of the board of comissioners of accounts of the county. He was a member of the Baptist Church and the Masonic Lodge.
