Bensley B English 1877- lived in NYC in 1910 (hotel clerk) ---------------- Harvey William English, the son of Jonathan and Jane (Moore) English was born in Clay County, Missouri on March 24, 1825. He attended school in the country until he was fifteen. In 1846, he volunteered in the First Missouri Mounted Volunteers, under Col. Donaphan, and went through the entire Mexican War. He married Mary Fletcher of Missouri on November 7, 1851. Seven years after Mary's death he married Lydia Wheelock of Springville, New York on January 21, 1858 in Fremont County, Iowa. He arrived in Helena on June 18, 1864 and soon laid out ranches in Prickly Pear Valley, Rock and Wolf Creeks. In 1867, he was elected chairman of school directors for four years. In July 1881, he was President of the Mexican Association of Montana. Harvey and Lydia had six children: Iantha, Molly, Jefferson D., Charles Francis, Harvey Moore, and Bensley B. English. Judge English was in Seattle when he died in May 1888 at age 63. His body was brought to Helena for burial. The body was accompanied by Dr. J. W. Wheeler. (Helena Independent, 5/11/1888) Herrmann & Co. provided the following: rough box to the cemetery, six pair white gloves and crepe, digging of grave $10.00. He has a military stone "US Soldier, Mexican War," cut by Vermont Marble Co., Proctor, Vermont. He is buried in Section B, Row 2.
