His brother, Bertrand Wright, a methodist [sic] minister, died Dec. 3, 1957. Burial Thursday in Pleasant Hill cemetery, Leesburg. An obit in same newspaper, in 3 Oct 1958 edition said, "because of his mother's death when he was three, Hugh was reared in the home of his grandparents, Joseph and Lydia Cowgill Wright. On Thanksgiving Day 1900, he was united in marriage to Julia R. Denney and to this union two children were born, Mrs. Rebecca Wright Foor of Hillsboro and Robert E. WRIGHT Prof. Hugh J. Wright, who is well-known as the principal of the Martinsville high school, a position which he has held for two years, was born on October 10, 1875, in Highland county, Ohio, the son of Elwood and Rebecca (Johnson) Wright, both natives of that county, and both of whom are now deceased. Mr. Wright's father was a farmer and machinist. Hugh J. Wright was educated in Highland county, where he attended the public schools, and in Wilmington College. For some time he taught in the district schools in the vicinity of Wilmington, and afterwards in Fairfield township, Highland county, where he was a principal of a graded (sic) school. Afterwards he became principal of the Leesburg public schools, but in 1908 removed to Martinsville, where he entered the lumber and builders' supply business and was thus engaged for three years. He then sold out and accepted the position of superintendent of the Martinsville high school, later becoming principal, under the new law. Professor Wright is well known in Clinton county as one of its leading educators. Not only is he a capable instructor, well-informed and skillful in teaching, but he is posessed of exceptional executive ability, and is particularly well adapted to supervisory educational work. During the years he has been engaged in teaching school, he has also dealt to some extent in real estate. In 1900 Professor Wright was married to Miss Julia Denney, of Highland county, this state, who has borne him two children, Robert Elwood and Rebecca. Being the grandson of Joseph Wright, one of the early ministers in the Friends church, of Clinton county, Professor Wright is himself a member of that church and during the past two years has been superintendent of the Friends Sunday school in Martinsville. He served one term as township clerk of Clark township and is prominent in the fraternal circles of Clinton county, being a member of the Masonic lodge, Knights of Pythias, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Junior Order of United American Mechanics and the Modern Woodmen of America. WRIGHT "An Old Man ______ a lone highway, Came in the evening cold and gray to a chasm, vast and deep and wide. The Old Man crossed in the twilight dim, For the sullen stream had no fear for him -- And when he wass safe on the other side, He builded a bridge to span the tide. "Old Man, cried a fellow pilgrim near, 'You're wasting your time by building here,' You have crossed the chasm deep and wide; Why build you this bridge to span the tide?' The builder lifted his old gray head. "Good friend, in the path I have come," he said, 'There followeth after me today a youth Whose feet must pass this way. "This stream, which has been as nought to me, To that fair-haired yough may a pitfall be. He too, must cross in the twilight dim; "Good friend, I am building this bridge for him." These words are indeed expressive of the earthly pilgrimage of Hugh Johnson Wright, in whose life were joined the greatest virtues of love, and of service and devotion. Born on October 10, 1875, near Samantha, he was the eldest son of Elwood and Rebecca Johnson Wright. Because of his mother's death when he was three, Hugh was reared in the home of his grandparents, Joseph and Lydia Cowgill Wright. On Thanksgiving Day 1900, he was united in marriage to Julia R. Denney, and to this union two children were born--Mrs. Rebecca Wright Foor of Hillsboro and Robert E. Wright of Forrestville, Ohio. In addition to his widow and children, he is survived by three brothers, Gurney and Benson of Wilmington and Harry of Highalnd; two sisters, Mrs. T. E. Rannells of Wilmington and Mrs. Leanna Outland of Rich Square, N.C.; three grandchildren, Mrs. Ann Wright Rhude and William Hugh Foor of Hillsboro and Robert E. Wright, Jr. of Forrestville; and three great-grandchildren, Kathy Ann Rhude, Rebecca Jane Rhude and Thomas Hugh Wright. Two brothers preceded him in death--Francis Marion Wright of Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1930, and the Reverend Bertrand E. Wright of Marshall in 1957. Hugh was a Birthright Quaker. His grandfather was one of the founders of Wilmington College, he taught school in Clinton county, served as the superintendent of Martinsville schools and as the assistant county superintendent. He was later elected Judge of the Probate Court of Clinton county and served faithfully for 24 years in that capacity. On Oct. 8, 1931, he was ordained to the Ministry in the Friends Yearly meeting in Wilmington. For over 50 years he was a faithful member of the Martinsville Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons, and of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Minister--judge--teacher--poet--paths of service which found a happy crossroads in the gentle life of Hugh Johnson Wright, each finding its expressions in the countless deeds and memories that comprised his life--A life that was needed, a life that was lived, faithfully and a life that remains--not to be mourned, but to challenge those who follow. His Christian philosophy, to be emulated by all of us, is beautifully expressed in these lines from his own pen: Fine churches grace our cities, built on Cathedral plan; But in vain we build the Churches, if we do not build the man; Tho' their spires point towards heaven and their form much beuaty shows, We have failed in all we've striven if man unbuilded goes; For Character makes the man--whether rich or poor-- And regardless of life's span, a good name is better far than riches, we are told.
