Description	:	The eldest child of James Newton Atkisson and Margaret Mendenall, Isaac was born in Hawkins or McMinn County, Tennessee and later moved with his parents to Illinois and Iowa, where they worked as farmers. He began to study law around 1849, but is said to have gotten caught up in the rush for gold in California, where he lived from about 1851-54, at which point he returned to Iowa and ran a saw mill in Henry County for several years. Read More	The eldest child of James Newton Atkisson and Margaret Mendenall, Isaac was born in Hawkins or McMinn County, Tennessee and later moved with his parents to Illinois and Iowa, where they worked as farmers. He began to study law around 1849, but is said to have gotten caught up in the rush for gold in California, where he lived from about 1851-54, at which point he returned to Iowa and ran a saw mill in Henry County for several years. In the winter of 1860-61, he worked the northern part of Missouri for Stephen A. Douglas's presidential campaign and engaged in a joint discussion with Judge Wood, of Sullivan County, on the Rights of the South to Secede. The discussion lasted two days and nights, and from that time on Isaac was considered a Northern Abolitionist, and was warned to leave the State if he wished to save his life. He enlisted in the War of the Rebellion as an orderly sergeant in Missouri's Company A, Mercer County Battalion, Six Months Militia from September 1861 to April 1862. During the time he was away from home, and the rest of his family away in Iowa, some of his enemies burned his household goods and a library valued at $500. He was admitted to the bar in 1861, and in 1862, presumably after his militia service ended, commenced the practice of law. In 1868 he moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, where he maintained a hotel called the Midland Pacific and then moved to Ashland in Saunders County to run a grocery business, which his sons took over so he could resume practicing law. In 1872 he went to Kansas, taking contracts with the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fé Railroad, building twenty miles of the road. In 1874 he sold his interest at Ashland and moved to Nelson, Nebraska to again practice law. He reportedly lived in the first house built there. In the spring of 1879 he moved to a farm adjoining the town and engaged in stock-raising and real estate, in connection with his law practice. In 1875 he was appointed Judge of Nuckolls County. In the mid-1880s Isaac was elected president of the County Sabbath School Convention to help organize the county's schools. He was an active member of the Baptist Church for 30 years and was commander of the local G.A.R. post, which he organized, at the time of his death, as well as a member of the I.O.O.F. "Judge Atkisson was well known in Nuckolls County, as an exemplary citizen and Christian," read one of his obituaries after he died. "He delighted in reconciling parties and settling difficulties and will always be remembered as one who was willing to act as a mediator." Isaac married Melvina Clark on December 5, 1850 in Lee County, Iowa and they had five children: Mary Josephine, James Byron, Horatio Kennington, Franceway "Frank" Day, and Sarah Flora.
