Description	:	J. J. HOLLAND Judge John Jay Holland passed away Monday morning after a lingering illness of several months. Mr. Holland was one of Dunlap’s oldest citizens. He had served several terms as Police Judge, from which he received the title, “Judge.” He has also practiced law in the local justice court and was very successful. HOLLAND Judge John Jay Holland passed away Monday morning after a lingering illness of several months. Mr. Holland was one of Dunlap’s oldest citizens. He had served several terms as Police Judge, from which he received the title, “Judge.” He has also practiced law in the local justice court and was very successful. Mr. Holland’s death leaves another vacancy in the ranks of the boys of 1860, who are very rapidly passing away. He was born in Garfield county, Ohio, on March 27, 1836. He enlisted in Company I, seventh regiment, Ohio Volunteers in 1860. On April 15, 1865 he was married to Lucinda Holland at Chattanooga, Tennessee. In 1867 they came to Kansas and settled on the farm south of town and later moved to town where he resided until death. To this union was born twelve children, six sons and six daughters, of whom ten remain to mourn his loss. He died October 11, 1915 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Nellie Maholm at the age of 76 years, 6 months and 14 days. The funeral was held Thursday afternoon at the church and burial was made in the Dunlap cemetery. Garfield was laid out in 1875 when the Pennsylvania Railroad was extended to that point. The community was named after James A. Garfield, an Ohio legislator and afterward 20th President of the United States. This did not exist when he was born but it might have been established in the area where he was born in 1836.
