Brother to Anne Lilbourne Gravatt Walden, Frances Epes Gravatt Crowder, Byrd Moncure Gravatt Jones, Mary Pinckney Gravatt Sheffield, and William Moncure Gravatt Jr. He was the husband of Isbell Turnbull Gravatt. Children are Mary Rebecca Gravatt Crawford, Isbell Stuart Turnbull Gravatt, and Rev. Dr. Jaqueline Segar Epes Gravatt. Mr. Gravatt represented the Prince Edward County School Board and other defendants in the 1954 landmark case of Brown vs. the Board of Education. He defended this case all the way to the United States Supreme Court He was educated in Blackstone schools, Episcopal High School and the University Of Virgina. He earned letters in four sports in high school and college. He graduated from the University of Virginia Law School in 1933 with an L.L.B. Degree. He was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon and The Eli and Imp Societies. He was also a member of the Secret Seven Society, a secret philanthropic organization whose members are only revealed at death. Mr. Gravatt began his practice of law with his father in 1933. He was elected by the Virginia General Assembly to the position of Judge of Nottoway County Trial Court and Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court. He served as Judge for 35 years. He continued to practice law in Blackstone until his death. He served on the UVA Board of Visitors from 1948 to 1958. He was a former member and past president of the Blackstone Rotary Club. He was also a member of the Virginia Constitutional Convention in 1956. He was elected to Who's Who of American Attorneys, and was a member of the Virginia State Bar and the Virginia Bar Association and was a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. Segar Gravatt's reputation as an attorney stretched across the Commonwealth of Virginia and beyond. He believed in the Constitution of the United States . Each time it was attacked he rose in anger to defend it. He fought against anything that would weaken the principles upon which this nation was founded.
