Nodaway Democrat, Sep 22, 1892 -------------- Judge Stephen Morehouse and Family Born on February 11, 1813 near Newark, New Jersey, Stephen Morehouse was the son of Stephen Morehouse Sr. and Elizabeth Steinbeck Morehouse, both natives of New Jersey. Mr. Morehouse was a decendant of Thomas Morehouse of Fairfield, Connecticut, who was a deputy to the General Court in 1653 and one of the origanal settlers of the New Haven colony. When he was about eight year old, he moved to Delaware County, Ohio, with his parents and there received his education. The family was of staunch Presbyterian faith. In 1834 in Ohio, he was married to Miss Harriett Wood, who was born August 25, 1815, in Buffalo, New York, the daughter of Frederick Wood and Electa Russell. While still living in Ohio, Stephen Morehouse held a township office of sheriff. In 1856, he moved with his family to Nodaway County, Missouri, where on July 25, 1857, he purchased a half section of land, one of the first purchases to be entered in Township 66. It was on this farm that Mr. Morehouse, using just three tools, constructed their home. Mr. Morehouse held several county offices during his long residence in this vicinity. For several yeas, he was a Justice of the Peace, in 1860, he was a County Judge, and in 1874, was elected a Probate Judge. He was a forceful speaker, and with his sons, was active in the Democratic rallies. He and his wife, Harriett (note varying spelling of Harriett) Ellen, reared a family of eight children, among them the Honorable Albert P. Morehouse, Governor of Missouri in 1887-1888. The other children were Stephen D., Wellington, Herbert, Alvina A., Harriett, Ellen, Rosa Belle, and Phoeba Anna. Mrs. Morehouse died on July 5, 1891, at their home in Union Township (Pickering), and the following year, on September 19, 1892, Judge Stephen Morehouse died at his home on North Main Street in Maryville. They are buried side by side in the old Morehouse Cemetery, southwest of Hopkins.
