Kelley, the subject of this sketch, was born in Putnam County, New York, January l0, l820, and died at his home in Leon, September 8, l898, his age being 78 years, 7 months and 28 days. The deceased was converted to the hope of the gospel grace in his l6th year and united with the Baptist Church in his native state. He was united in marriage to Hannah Cooper in l842, who was a native of Pennsylvania. To them twelve children were born--six sons and six daughters. Three of the children are dead, two having died in infancy. The oldest sons, Robert and George, were soldiers in the army during the rebellion. The deceased came west to Van Buren County, Iowa, January, l840, settling near Farmington, and to Decatur County in l853. He was a resident of this county forty-five years, passing through many of the privations of a pioneer life. Judge Kelley's first residence was about five miles south of Leon, on the north side of Little River, where he had a farm of 320 acres in a good state of cultivation and well suited to raising stock. He was elected the second county judge to succeed Samuel C. Thompson in l857, serving one term and six months. After serving the county faithfully and acceptably during his time of public trust, he retired again to his former occupation until l882 when he was called by his constituency to represent Decatur County in the legislature, the issue of the campaign being principally the question of prohibition. Mrs. Kelley passed to the land of rest, January l3, l89l. He was united in marriage the second time to Mrs. Helen Augusta Durrell, November 20, l892, who is still living to mourn the absence of a kind and affectionate companion with a large circle of relatives and friends. Judge Kelley was a good citizen, a kind neighbor, a true husband, a loving father, a wise counselor, a true Christian; but his work is done and he is now sweetly resting from his labor, while his works will follow him. The funeral took place in the Baptist Church in Leon on Sunday, September ll, l898. The sermon was delivered by the writer, the text being I Corr. XV and XVI, after which the remains were borne to the Leon Cemetery, followed by a large number of sorrowing friends and laid to rest by the side of his companion to await the resurrection of the just.
