They had seven children. 1. Thornhill (1895-1978) married (1st) Alice Carson (1902-1928), They had one child Eliza beth Lee Wilson. Thornhill married (2nd) Carrie Agnor (1900-1969) who was lost in the flood of Hurricane Camille. They had two children, Jean Brown (1932-1962) and Nancy Brooks. He married (3rd) Frances Street Massie (1901-1997). 2. Henry Shields (1897-1960) married Mary Duncan (1901-1989). They had four children: Henry Jr. (1928-1996), Lilly Salzano, Bernard and Katie Massie Fitch. 3. Carroll Judson (1899-1920). 4. Irene May (1901-1984) married (1st) John Clarkson (1892-1928). They had two children, Elgin Horsely and Nannie Mae. Irene married (2nd) Stanely Gardner (1897-1973). 4. Eliza Hall (1903-1978) married Robert Kent Brent (1892 1942). They had one child Robert, Jr. 6. Arthur (1905-1981) married Mary Bishop (1907-1995). They had seven children: Betty Prindle, Margaret Fox, Mary Gray, Arthur, Jr., Judson, Violet Withers and Charlotte Bond Wright. 7. Leland (1907-1977) married Jessie Tribbs. They had four children: Isabelle Massie Giles, Irene Bell (1942 1992), Eleanor Wood Frackleton Stone and Peggy Cooper. Prior to marriage Grandmother was Postmaster at Bryant, Virginia Post Office (1890-1893). Granddaddy was a successful farmer and orchardist. His apple orchards required lots of work, pruning, spraying, picking and packing apples for storage and shipping. They made barrels of cider and after it aged some, a few people you only. saw once a year would come by for samples. Some was saved for vinegar. They also made apple butter. He also raised corn, wheat, tobacco and hay which required planting, caring for and harvest ing. He also had a large garden. Everyone loved his watermelons and cantaloupes. Grandmother kept busy with housework, fixing meals for family and farm workers and tending to her chickens. Henry, Arthur and Leland were farmers. Thornhill drove for Coca Cola in Lynchburg, was distributor for Pepsi Cola in Lexington, and later a motorman for the Washington, D.C. transit Company. After retiring, he returned to Nelson County to farm. Irene was a merchant at Colleen and after marrying Stanley, moved to Maryland and worked for Woodward and Lothrop. Eliza was a sales clerk for Miller and Rhoads in Richmond and later at Guggenheimer Nursing Home in Lynchburg. Real often some of the children and families would go to Grandmothers after church for lunch and visiting and we grandchildren en joyed playing with each other. In good weather we played ball, hide and seek, etc. When we played inside, they had a wall telephone (disconnected) we used as well as a phonograph with lots of records. No radios or televisions then. Granddaddy, Grandmother and Carroll Judson are buried in the family cemetery on the property. Submitted to Nelson County Heritage 1807-2000 by: Nan Clarkson.
