Parker, Delaware county loses two of its very best citizens and two of its pioneer settlers. Mr. and Mrs. Parker passed away within the short space of eight hours. Mr. Parker succumbing to an illness which has grown more severe as his age advanced and his faithful wife as the result of shock produced from a fall sustained at her home recently in which she suffered a broken hip. Mrs. Parker’s accident occurred when she fell on the icy porch at her home while going to get her husband a fresh drink of water. Her advanced aged, 74 years, 10 months and 1 day, made her recovery difficult and the great shock of her life partner’s demise threw the balance against her in the struggle with the Grim Reaper. Lemuel L. Parker was born in Sherbrooke county, Province of Quebec, Canada, on February 27, 1838, making his age at death 76 years, 11 months and 6 days. He was a son of James and Harriett (Lowell) Parker, and came of good old Revolutionary stock, both his grandfathers having fought for the independence of the colonies under General Washington. His father died in Canada, but the mother afterward came to Iowa and passed away in Wright county. Mr. Parker was reared and educated in Canada, remaining there until 1861, when he came to Iowa, settling at once in Delaware county. He purchased a farm of 280 acres in Oneida township, southeast of Greeley, and engaged in stock raising and dairying. He has remained on the same farm since acquiring it, and during the half century which has passed has made many improvements thereon until it is rated one of the best farms in Delaware county. In late years, Mr. Parker has been in failing health, his latest illness dating from early in the present winter, and his advanced age gave relatives but small hope of his recovery. Mrs. Parker’s maiden name was Julia D. Rider, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Abner Rider, and she too was a native of Canada, having been born in Sherbrooke county, Province of Quebec, April 4, 1840. She was united in marriage to Mr. Parker in Canada on February 18, 1861 and came with him upon his emigration to Iowa. Four children were born to this union, Miss Ida and Willard H., having preceded their parents in death. Two sons survive, Arthur James, residing on the home farm in Oneida township, and Charles Horace, who is engaged in the automobile and livery business in Winthrop, and who formerly resided in Manchester. Three grandsons and one granddaughter also survive, as does also a brother of Mr. Parker, Geo. Parker, who resides near Greeley. he family attended the Methodist Episcopal church and contributed of their means to its support. For many years Mr. Parker had been a director in the Farmer’s Mutual Insurance company and also filled the offices of school director and trustee. It is fifty-four years since Mr. and Mrs. Parker came to Iowa, and he family attended the Methodist Episcopal church and contributed of their means to its support. By their friendly and unassuming ways and kindly manner they won for themselves the respect and love of legions of friends. Thus, as they lived, a man and woman of highest integrity and worth of character, they have passed beautifully from this vale, united even in death. The funeral was held at the home on Monday afternoon at 1 o'clock, in the presence of a very large company of their sorrowing relatives and friends. The services were conducted by Rev.
