Description	:	Julia Elizabeth Tonkin Glass Glass, Julia Elizabeth Tonkin, 94, retired teacher and homemaker, died Friday, Aug. 20, 2004. She was born Sept. 7, 1909 in Great Bend, KS, the second of three daughters of Mary Esther Barrow Tonkin and William Arthur Tonkin. Following graduation from Great Bend High School, she attended Fort Hays State College for two years and obtained a teachers certificate. She then returned to school, graduated with a... Read More	Julia Elizabeth Tonkin Glass Glass, Julia Elizabeth Tonkin, 94, retired teacher and homemaker, died Friday, Aug. 20, 2004. She was born Sept. 7, 1909 in Great Bend, KS, the second of three daughters of Mary Esther Barrow Tonkin and William Arthur Tonkin. Following graduation from Great Bend High School, she attended Fort Hays State College for two years and obtained a teachers certificate. She then taught school in the Great Bend area and helped support her younger sister's college education. These were the early years of the great depression. She then returned to school, graduated with a degree in education from Fort Hays State College and returned to teaching. On Aug. 23, 1936 she married Clarence William Glass and moved to Ellis, KS. During the World War II years, while Clarence was in the military, she operated Clarence's Gamble Hardware store and raised her young son. In 1954, she returned to teaching in the Ellis grade school and taught the second grade for 20 years. In 1988, she was named to the "Teacher's Hall of Fame." Julia was very active in the Methodist Church and it's auxiliary. She was very proud of the fact that she was a founding member in 1949 of the Ellis Chapter of P.E.O. In 1996, she moved to Wichita, Clarence having passed away in 1993, and resided at Georgetown Village. Although sad to leave her Ellis friends of so many years, she soon made many good friends at Georgetown, where she continued her pastime of playing bridge at which she was very accomplished. In 2002, she moved to Life Care Center of Wichita. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Arthur J. and Jule P. Glass of Wichita; a grandson, Elliott J. Glass and wife, Susan of Kansas City; a granddaughter, Gwendolyn J. Glass Klimiuk of Colorado Springs; and four great-grandchildren, James and Sarah Glass and John and Andrew Klimiuk.
