Mrs. James Birkel Passed Away Tuesday Evening, April 29. Mrs. James Birkel, residing four miles southeast of David City, died Tuesday evening, April 29, about 7 o'clock after illness of only a few hours. She was taken seriously ill at 1 p. m., and continued growing worse until her death occurred. Her father, sister and brother, residing in David City, were called to her bedside but death came before they reached the Birkel home. The funeral services were held this (Thursday) morning at 10 o'clock in St. Mary's Catholic church in David City. Rev. Father Hennessey, of Center Catholic church, conducted the funeral. Interment was in the Catholic cemetery near David City. Mrs. Birkel's maiden name was Julia Hilger and she was a daughter of John Hilger, of David City. She was born in Jackson county, Iowa, on November 17, 1870. After several years residence in Iowa she moved with her parents to Missouri and from there came to Butler county 29 years ago. Miss Hilger was married to James Birkel on April 2, 1894. Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Birkel, seven of whom are living. There are six sons, Joseph, Charles, George, Edward, Alousius and Lawrence, and one daughter, Emily. Mrs. Birkel is survived also by Mr. Birkel and by her father, her brother, George Hilger, and four sisters, Miss Christine Hilger of David City, Miss Agnes Hilger, who is employed in Utica, Miss Louise Hilger of South Auburn, and Sister Mary Loretta of Helena, Mont., better known here as Miss Emily Hilger. Mrs. Birkel's mother died nearly 28 years ago. Misses Agnes and Louise Hilger came to attend the funeral, as did Mr. Birkel's brothers, Jacob Birkel from Fullerton and Nicholas Birkel from Iowa, and their wives. Mrs. Birkel had been a member of the Catholic church since childhood and had ever been a devout follower of that faith. Her demise is mourned by a great many relatives and friends.
