But they were on the ocean six months. Grandma [Eva Kraus] knew she would have her third child about six months after they left Germany, but expected to be in America in plenty of time for the birth of the third child. They started out with about fifty passengers but since the voyage was so long food and water became exhausted, and much sickness set in. They lived on rice. About half the passengers perished. Grandma said the sharks seemed to sense it when there was a corpse, so the sailors had to dispose the bodies overboard. Shortly before they reached land Elizabeth [Julia's Sister] became very ill, and Grandma prayed that she might live until they sighted land. Her prayers were answered. We now have an Aunt Elizabeth buried in New York, in 1849 [1854]. Sometime before they landed Grandma gave birth to her third child; a girl name Julia born May 10th [1854]. Since there was no food but rice, Grandma had no milk for the baby, and a kind Jewish mother nursed Julia ... Now let us record a short romance. Probably the shortest in history. Surely the shortest in the Kraus history. This romance centers around Julia. When she became 16 years of age, Grandma Kraus started looking for a husband for her. At that time they had a Preacher in Palaska by the name of Liesveld [Possibly Jacob?] and he said he had just the man for Julia. He had a nephew who lived in Nebraska, by the name of Frank Liesveld. So they made plans. The day the nephew arrive, the Preacher brought him to see his new bride, who was feather stripping with her mother. As you well would guess, when feather stripping, if anyone even so much as walks across the room, feathers begin to fly everywhere. The wedding was set for the next day, and sister-in-law Paulina said she would bake the wedding cake. Since there was little room in the house, they thought they would put it outside under a wash tub. While the wedding was performed, the dogs upset the tub and you can guess the rest. Grandpa Kraus give $200 to Frank and Julia as a dowry. Imagine saving $200 in sixteen years from being broke and living in that wilderness. Frank had three sisters and his mother and father, all living in a home consisting of two rooms downstairs and two room in the attic. Imagine the change for Julia. At home she was the oldest girl and had so much work to do. Now nothing to do but get homesick. Later a home was built for Julia and then she wrote and asked her brothers and sisters to visit her. This is what started a chain reaction in the Kraus family. First Coon met Dora there. Then Ernest met Hattie and Mary met Will Nahley. So we see that the little baby that was born on sail boat surely played a large part in the Kraus history. We all know that Grandma and Grandpa lived with Will and Emmie till their death. Grandma was bed ridden for ten years but lived to the ripe old age of 101. These were memories told by my mother when she stayed with me. - Eva Hanold"
