Hillman Byram officiating. Burial will be at Brearley Cemetery by Cornwell Funeral Service. Judy was a native of Atkins, Arkansas and daughter of Margaret Yarnell Hughey, who survives, and the late Rife Sibley Hughey, a prominent druggest. As a young woman of 21, Judy joined the United States Coast Guard and was stationed in Washington D.C. where she was involved in cryptology and the monitoring of enemy naval vessels along the Eastern seaboard. In 1958 while living in Little Rock, Judy became active in the “Women’s Emergency Committee to Open Our Schools,” http://www.encyclopediaofarkansas.net/encyclopedia/entry-detail.aspx?entryID=716. The organization advocated for the integration of the Little Rock public school system and was a major obstacle to Governor Orval Faubus’s efforts to prevent racial integration. These brave women spoke out in favor of a special election to remove segregationists from the Little Rock school board, at the same time facing personal risk due to the heated segregationist climate in Little Rock. Judy was an avid bridge player, loved reading (biographies and westerns), debating politics, watching birds and tending her flower garden. She also worked occasionally for her husband Joe in his graphic design business. Other survivors include a daughter, Joanna Lange (Danny) of Washington, D.C.; a son, Bob Gray (Cynthia), New York, N.Y.; a brother, Rife Hughey, Nashville, Tenn.; a sister, Nancy Young, Atkins; and a grandson, Scott Lange, Washington D.C.
