After literally decades of research finally found a birth for my great grandmother, Julia Thompson-Erickson. My great grandmother, Julia (Thompson) Erickson, was one of the fire victims that "burned up" in the Yankton Mental Asylum fire of 12 Feb 1899. I use the term "burned up" for that is the same term her dau., Eliza (Erickson) Sullivan, used when she told me about her mother Julia. (Eliza Sullivan told me this story in about 1957 when I was about 9 years old). Now, my grandmother, Eliza Sullivan, told me this story only ONCE in her life of 89 years...told me only once about her mother. She found it an embarrassment and as many do today. I say the truth is the truth and Julia's medical records state Julia had medical problems due to CHILD BIRTH. Julia lived with her husband, John Erickson, and children as HOMESTEADERS in the Morris Creek area of Dakota Territory (now in Meade Co., South Dakota). She had numerous children...all home births. A fellow researcher told me that Julia Erikson had a baby that died (have no name or exact year of birth). Baby that died had to be a number of years before Julia's commitment to the Asylum in June, 1894. Medical Records: 1. What is the patients' name and age? Married or Single? If children, how many? Age of youngest child? ANSWER: Julia Erickson, married, 6 children living and ONE DEAD, youngest 4 years old. 2. Where was the patient born? ANSWER: Wisconsin 3. Where is his (or her) place of residence? ANSWER: Meade Co., South Dakota 4. What has been the patient's occupation? ANSWER: Housewife 5. Is this the first attack? If not, when did others occur, and what was their duration? ANSWER: (oops...need to find original records and get answer). 6. When were the first symptoms of this attack manifested, and in what way? ANSWER: About 4 years ago soon after birth of last child. 7. Does the disease appear to be increasing, decreasing or stationary? ANSWER: Increasing 8. Is the disease variable, and are there rational intervals? If so, do they occur at regular periods? ANSWER: Variable, better at times, never just right 9. On what subject or in what way is derangement now manifested? State fully. ANSWER: About snakes, insects, ownership of property, children and husband. 10. Has the patient shown any disposition to injure others? ANSWER: Some threats lately. 11. Has suicide ever been attempted? If so, in what way? Is the propensity now active? ANSWER: No 12. Is there a disposition to filthy habits, destruction of clothing, breaking glass, etc? ANSWER: None so far as I can learn, but think possibly there may be. 13: What relatives, including grand parents and cousins, have been insane? ANSWER: None, so far as I can learn. 14. Did the patient manifest any pecularities of temper, habits, disposition or pursuits, before the accession of the disease...any predominant passions, religious impressions, etc? ANSWER: Appeared flighty at times. SNAKE theory is predominant. 15. Has the patient been subject to any bodily disease...epilepsy, suppressed eruption, discharges of sores, or ever had any injury of head. ANSWER: None except SUPPRESSED MENSTRUATION FOR OVER TWO YEARS. Can't learn definately, never had fits. 16. Was the patient ever addicted to intemperance in any form? (My note: I'm assuming addicted to intemperance means addicted to alcohol). ANSWER: No. 17. Has a restraint or confinement been employed? If so, of what kind, and how long? ANSWER: No 18. What is supposed to be the cause of the disease? ANSWER: MANNER OF LIFE (VERY POOR), CHILD BIRTH PERIOD AND SUPPRESSED MENSTRUATION. 19. What treatment has been pursued for the relief of the patient? Mention particulars and the effected? ANSWER: None 20. State any matter supposed to have any bearing on the case? ANSWER: The family have been very poor for several years and have very few if any visitors. THEORIES AS TO ORIGIN: The fire evidently originated in the laundry drying room which was located in the northwest corner of the basement. The drying room is almost air right and in the floor directly under the drying rack, is a large coil of steam pipes, which is kept very hot in order to dry the clothes. Mr. Rumford the laundryman says that lint from the hundreds of articles dried collects near the steam coil being attracted thereto by the currents of hot air passing from the coil and that enough lint and combustible dust collected there to cause spontaneous combustion. Either that or a garment dropped from the enclosed drying rack to the steam coil, took fire and ignited the pine frame of the rack. THE HOUR . The whistle on the main building sounded the alarm at 10 minutes after 2, Sunday morning. THE TEMPERATURE . The thermometer at the rear of the main building marked 28 degrees BELOW ZERO while the fire was at its height, the mercury being then under the influence of the flames.
