Peter and Paul's church occurred last Saturday morning when relatives and friends gathered from far and near to pay tribute to the memory of Mrs. Fred Baumert who died on Thursday morning, May seventh, having been afflicted with diabetes for some time past. The deceased was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Liekhus, of this place, who were pioneer residents of the Olean neighborhood; the one whose death they now so deeply mourn came there with them when but a mere babe from Iowa in 1878, where she was born the year before on the thirtieth of January. As Juliana Liekhus she spent the greater part of her life at Olean; she attended the school there and later was confirmed, and also married at Sacred Heart church, adjoining which she lived until her marriage to Mr. Baumert. Five sons, ranging in age from four years to twelve, were born to them and with the father deeply mourn the great loss they have sustained. The departing of loved ones is always sad, but in the case of a mother who is called from little children it is doubly so. Sorrow has come to them and emptied their home since her soul went hence, but the memory of the teachings of her faith will tend to lead them to the higher planes of life and be an uplift to them throughout the trials and temptations of this life. May human sympathy and divine comfort come richly to their home, and all other where there is a mother's vacant chair. The funeral was held on Saturday morning at ten o'clock and many had to stand throughout the service at the church as the seating capacity was overtaxed. If the flowers that covered the casket could have expressed the feelings of those who placed them there, a tribute of love, devotion and esteem for the loved one who slept within would have poured forth in eloquence with the fragrance of the blossoms. Rev. A. Brass celebrated requiem high mass and gave a consoling sermon which brought solace to the aching hearts of the bereaved. Interment was made at the close of the services in the cemetery east of town. Besides the husband, sons and parents, she is survived by two brothers, Henry Liekhus of the Olean neighborhood and Joseph Liekhus of Boone county, and eight sisters, Mrs. Albert Stimal of Lawton, Okla., Mrs. Henry Kluthe of Cedar Rapids, Mrs. John Kassmeier of the Tabor neighborhood, Mrs. Ferdinand Kampschneider, Mrs. Stephen Schrage and Mrs. Jos. Dierkschneider, all of the Olean neighborhood, Mrs. Adolph Ritzdorf of southeast of this place, and Miss Katie Liekhus who is still at home. To all these goes out the heartfelt sympathy of a host of friends. In their grief the bereaved must look above for resignation and have faith in the Infinite who guides us in life and in eternity for the best. Their loved one was called at the noontide of a useful life, and her loss is a distinct one to the family and friends for she was a lady who was devoted to her home and dwelt in love and unselfishness with all with whom she came in contact. She died beloved by those nearest to her by the ties of kinship, esteemed by her friends, and at peace with her conscience and with full trust in her Savior having been born, was reared and died in the faith of Catholic church; to such "Death is beautiful as feet of friend Coming with welcome at our journey's end."
