He was born July 22nd, 1808, on the island of St. Croise, West India (i.e. St. Croix, West Indies). He was the oldest of three children and only four years old when his parents died. He being of Danish descent was taken with his brothers to Copenhagen, Denmark, by an uncle where he received a good education. When about eighteen years of age, he came to the United States where he engaged in clerking on steam-boats on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, for some years and afterward followed civil engineering, surveying the Wabash and Erie Canal. He settled to farming in Clearfield county, Pennsylvania and there married Miss Elizabeth Ann Warrick in the year 1839, who survives him in her seventy-fourth year. The fruit of their union was nine children, seven of whom are still living as follows: Mrs. Lucy Buchanan, of Craig; Rodney Jeger, Kokomo, Ind.; Hother Jeger, Mrs. Esther A. Bell, Craig; Mrs. Emma Wilson, Tekamah; Fremont Jeger, Bertha and Mrs. Jesse Young, Craig. In 1844 he moved his family west, stopping in Rush county, Ind., the first winter and working at twenty-five cents a day during the winter. The following spring he settled in the heavy forests near Brownsburg, Ind. Here after securing a small homestead and a shelter for his family he had fifty cents to start with but partaking in a large measure of the hardihood of the early pioneers and being self reliant, he began life in earnest and soon cleared out a small farm almost with his own hands. In about 1856 he removed to Lizton, Ind., and engaged in merchandising and farming. In 1882 he moved west and settled in Nebraska where most of his children had preceded him. Here he was content to live among his children and attend his garden, which he continued to do until death came. He was a hardy pedestrian in his young manhood and thought little of walking from Harrisburgh to Philadelphia and other cities as at that time there were no railroads. His health began failing in October last but nothing of a serious nature when he was attacked with heart failure from which he never rallied. In about 1842 he became a member of the Christian church he having already decided from reading the Scriptures that this was the true faith and only waited the opportunity to confess his dear Savior. His worthy companion going with him from the Baptist church. He being of decided convictions and positive temperament took up the cause in earnest and was a worthy and leading member whereever he lived. In Indiana at Brownsburg and Lizton, in the latter place filling the place of the elder and was a strong pillar in the church. On coming to Nebraska he bought and took with him a communion set, and often gathered the sacred brethren together at his own house and partook of the emblems until the church at Craig was organized he being one of the leading members in securing the organization and remaining a devoted member until his death, filling the office of an elder until his hearing became so poor that he could not profitably conduct the service. By his long known request the funeral services took place from the house and were very simple consisting of reading from the scriptures, prayer and song, his convictions being against funerals as usually conducted. The days of his married life were fifty-five years and his church membership fifty-rwo years.
