The Rev. Meb Field was a respected pastor in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. Julius Ledbetter is listed in the 1860 United States Census for North Carolina, at New Salem, Randolph County, as a new-born white male child, age "2/12" (2 months old), in the household of parents James Ledbetter and Martha Ledbetter. The calculated birth month for two-month old infant Julius Ledbetter became June, 1860, because the U.S. Federal Census enumeration date was upon 9 August 1860, for this James Ledbetter household. This was only 8 months before the 12 April 1861 outbreak of the War Between the States (American Civil War). In addition to being a highly skilled gunsmith, James Ledbetter (1831-1906) was a productive farmer and trustworthy United States Postmaster (at the village of Red Cross, in Providence Township, Randolph County, NC).
