Tree On Highway A tree blown down across Highway 52 in a blinding rainstorm Sunday night was a contributing factor in the death of Osterhaus, of Dyersville, an Iowa Highway Commission employee. Osterhaus and Frank Griffin, also an employee of the Iowa Highway Commission at Dyersville, were called to remove the tree from Highway 52 about two miles east of Luxemburg. When they arrived, the tree had already been removed, but the service truck became stuck on the shoulder of the road. Osterhaus was shoveling gravel under a real wheel of the truck when a car driven by William C. Stoll, 63, Sherrill, came across the road, struck and killed him, according to Highway Patrolman Lloyd Etscheidt, who investigated. Blinded By Headlights Etscheidt said Stoll told him he was blinded by the headlights of the service truck and "I didn't even know what I hit." Dubuque County Coroner Eugene Siegert has called an inquest for 1:30 pm Friday at the Courthouse. Charges are pending further investigation, Etscheidt said. The body was taken to Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where friends may call after 7 pm Monday. The parish Rosary will be recited at 8 pm Tuesday. Funeral services will be at 9 am Wednesday at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, with burial in the church cemetery. Mr. Osterhaus was born near Dyersville, son of Mr. and Mrs. Anton Osterhaus. He married Leona Becker on Dec. 27, 1951. 10-Year Employee A lifelong resident of the Dyersville vicinity, he had been an employee of the Iowa Highway Commission for 10 years and was a member of the St. Francis Xavier Rosary Society and the Dyersville Sportsmen's Club. He is survived by his wife; two brothers, Erwin and Clarence, both of Dyersville; five sisters, Mrs. Greg (Betty) Tauke, Mrs. Hugo (Alvina) Krapfl and Mrs. Eddie (Jane) Mescher, all of Dyersville; Mrs. Elmer (Sylveria) Kramer of Worthington, Ia.; and Mrs. Ambrose (Isabelle) Westhoff of Earlville, Ia.; and his father, Anton, of Dyersville.
