I was looking at the tree for Temple Irenus Whitley and his wife, Anna Hatley Whitley. I noticed you had placed a note "For a maternal cousin whose father is unknown. Rest in peace cousin." I'm assuming you are referring to Julius Philmore Whitley who was mysteriously born to Temple and Anna 4 years after Temple died. My grandmother was a Whitley and often told the story of Uncle Philmore... Grandpa Temple didn't own any slaves. But when he was called to battle he told Grandma Annie to ride into town and buy her a slave to help around the farm while he was gone. She did just that! She went all alone driving her horse and buggy into the square in Albemarle and bought a male slave. Grandpa Temple was wounded in the war and died just a month after returning home as a result of his injuries. When the slaves were freed, the one Grandma had bought stayed on as he had no where else to go. He and Grandma Annie had a child together 4 years later in 1869, Uncle Philmore, and the slave lived out his remaining days there helping on the farm. Now, I don't know how much of that story is 100% accurate, but I do know that Uncle Philmore was very dark skinned. My grandmother was 24 years old when Uncle Pholmore passed and she knew him. I have just started trying to find paternal information for Uncle Philmore as it breaks my heart that his father was never able to be recognized. I have looked through the census reports for Big Lick Township in 1870. I found Anna Whitley and her children but it lists the infant Julius Philmore as being white and does not list any black men living on the property. This doesn't surprise me as she was obviously trying to conceal a huge secret for the times so that her son could live a "normal" life. The Stanly County Register of Deeds does hold many slave records but they are not searchable and are not sorted in any particular order. Feel free to add the information as passed down by word of mouth but not fact...as of yet...If I find any sale records to substantiate this I will be sure to share them with you. This story was told to me by my maternal grandmother, Stella Annalee "Annie Lee" Whitley Poplin. Her father was Sylvanus Whitley who was the son of Israel Whitley (Julius's half brother). My grandmother called him Uncle Philmore as he went by his middle name. I hope I can find a way to connect him, finally, to his real father."
