This week we are called upon to chronicle the death of another esteemed pioneer, Julius Johan Ponto, who passed away on Monday morning in his daughter, Mary Ponto Ohman's home, on 2 Nov 1936 at 1:00 p.m. He had attained the mature age of 81 years. Mr. Ponto was born in Schonlank Province of Posen, Germany to the parents Gottfried and Louise Bussian Ponto. He emigrated with his parents to the United States when he was a child, settling near New London, WI in Shawano County. He was baptized in infancy and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Winchester, WI on 24 Apr 1870. He arrived in North Dakota in 1881 and homesteaded the following year on his fine farm, two miles southwest of Sheyenne. On 19 Oct 1899 he was united in matrimony to Mrs. Jane Sites Abrahamson. To this happy union five children were born. His beloved wife preceded him in death 16 years ago on 15 Aug 1920. Survivors include his five children; one brother, August Ponto, of Hardy, Saskatchewan, Canada and many grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Thursday from the Grace Lutheran Church at 2:00 p.m. in Sheyenne and from the farm home at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. A. M. Swanson officiating. Pallbearers were H. O. Hallsten, William Milne, C. Hauge, H. G. Miller, D. O. Ostby and O. B. Stedman. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery of rural Sheyenne. The deceased represented a true American spirit throughout the years of his existence. With the ardent and faithful toll of the pioneer he sacrificed to give to life, beauty and power and benediction.. Unusually active and always in a jovial spirit he possessed an army of friends who extend to the bereaved their sympathy.
