Description	:	ELON COLLEGE, NC ~ June Stone Byrd, 89, of Elon College died Monday, Aug. 22, 2005, at the Hospice Home. Mrs. Byrd was born in Stokes County to the late Elder Preston Stone and Cassie Chilton Stone. Her deceased husband was Professor Luther Byrd at Elon College. She is survived by 18 nieces and nephews. While in graduate school, she served as a graduate assistant to... Read More	ELON COLLEGE, NC ~ June Stone Byrd, 89, of Elon College died Monday, Aug. 22, 2005, at the Hospice Home. Mrs. Byrd was born in Stokes County to the late Elder Preston Stone and Cassie Chilton Stone. Her deceased husband was Professor Luther Byrd at Elon College. She is survived by 18 nieces and nephews. Mrs. Byrd graduated from Westfield High School and later from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she also earned the master of education degree with majors in both Spanish and English. While in graduate school, she served as a graduate assistant to Dr. Arnold Perry, dean of the School of Education, teaching the Spanish methods. Having studied twice in Mexico, Mrs. Byrd made her last trip with a group from UNC-CH as guests of the Mexican government, representing both UNC-CH and the U.S. Department of State. Mrs. Byrd taught 19 years at Williams High School in Burlington, where she served many years as chairman of the Foreign Language Department, and was active in local, state and national teacher organizations. She was national vice president of the La Sociedad Honoria Hispanica and is an emeritus member. She was also named as the first state director of the La Sociedad Honoria Hispanica. She started the National and local Sociedad Honoria Chapters at Williams High. She is responsible for introducing Spanish in the Burlington city schools. Mrs. Byrd was a charter member of Eta Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, an honorary sorority for teachers. Mrs. Byrd holds memberships in several heraldic groups where she has served in local, state and national offices. She belonged to the following: the DAR, where she has held many offices; the National Society of the 17th Century, serving as state president from 1982 to 1985 and as secretary general; Daughter of the American Colonies; Magna Charta Dames; the Order of the Crown of Charlemagne in the USA; past member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy; Colonial Order of the Crown; and The Sovereign of Colonial Society American of Royal Descent. Mrs. Byrd was of the Baptist faith and served as Sunday school teacher, in Bible School, choir and as president of the Missionary Society. The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at Rich & Thompson Mortuary in Burlington before the service at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 25, in the funeral home chapel. There will be a graveside service at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 25, at Westfield Baptist Church. The family would like to extend special thanks to the friends and neighbors for their kindness and the care extended to Mrs. Byrd. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Hospice Home and Palliative Care Center of Alamance Caswell, 918 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215.
